BASIC ELECTRICAL SAFETY Part-2 Class VII
Safety • Safety is the condition of being protected against from any consequences of – failure, – damage, – error, – accidents, – harm or – any other event which could be considered nondesirable.
Electrical Safety • The term electrical safety refers to the state of being protected against any kind of electrical accident or hazard.
Electrical Safety • Electric safety is issue related to • – Safe handling of electricity (Do’s and don’ts with electricity) Protective Measures
Electrical Safety Electric safety is issue related to – Accident Control and – First aid/ Treatment of electric shock.
Electrical Safety • So the term: • Electrical Safety is associated with the Safety measures to prevent and protect from electrical hazard or accident.
Electrical Safety • The issue of safe handling of electricity can be learned into following segments 1. Safe handling of electricity (Do’s or Don’ts) Safety measures while handling with fitting, fixture, and other appliances in day to day use. (We learned this topic in class VI)
Electrical Safety Accident Control and First Aid / Treatment
Electrical Safety • In this Unit (Part-2) we will learn about the causes of accident related with electricity. – Events which causes electrical accident and steps to minimize the chance of electrical accident and hazards.
Electrical Safety Electrical Accident: An electrical accident is an undesired event caused by electric current resulting to injury to a person or damage to property.
Electrical Safety Electrical Accident: Injury means suffering, discomfort/inconvenience, physical or psychological injury or death that is caused by electric current.
Electrical Safety • The accident which occurs due to electricity can be classified in to two categories:
Electrical Safety • Indirect Accident : • The electrical accidents which occurs due to fear of electricity. • In this type of accident the actual role of electricity remains negligible. • In this type of accident the act of individual leads to injury.
Electrical Safety Indirect Accident : Fall: - The injury or accident occurs due to jump or fall from work place or height because of fear of possible electrical accident; leads indirect electrical accident.
Electrical Safety Indirect Accident : Collusion/Crash: - There are number of events which occurs due to fear as indirect electrical accident.
Electrical Safety Direct Accident : The electrical accident / injury which occurs due to the flow of electric current. In this accident the victim comes in direct contact of electrical supply.
Electrical Safety Direct Accident : On the basis of severity of injury; there are three categories of direct electrical accident. 1. Electric Shock 2. Electric Burn/ Electrocution 3. Electric Fire
Electrical Safety • Electric shock: When a person comes into contact with an electrical energy source an electrical current flows through the body causing pain or injury is defined as “Electric shock”.
Electrical Safety • Cause of Electric shock: ntains Our mount dy arge of water; about 70% of body mass; which good conductor of electricity whenever our body comes in contact of electrical energy source a current flows in our body.
Electrical Safety • Electric shock: The severity of electrical shock depends on three things: (1) the path the current travels in and through the body,
Electrical Safety • Electric shock: (2) the amount of voltage (high-voltage versus lowvoltage), and
Electrical Safety • Electric shock: (3) the type of current (alternating current or AC versus direct current or DC).
Electrical Safety • Electric shock: On the basis of severity there are three categories of electric shock 1. Mild Electric Shock: - A mild electric shock leaves a slight tingling sensation
Electrical Safety • Electric shock: 2. Moderate Electric Shock: Moderate electric shock causes the muscles to contract and it may be difficult to pull away from the electric current.
Electrical Safety • Electric shock: 3. Severe Electric Shock: - Severe electric shock causes respiratory or heart failure.
Electrical Safety • Electrical burn: When burn of tissues of living organism takes place due to flow of electric current is known as “electric burn”.
Electrical Safety • Electrical burn: Electrical burn occurs when severe electric shock causes tissue to burn.
Electrical Safety • Electrical burn: Electrical burns can be divided in to two categories 1. External burn 2. Internal burn.
Electrical Safety • External Electrical burn: When burn occurs due to electric current appears on external part of body because the electric current takes a path through external tissues. The external burns remains visible with naked eyes.
Electrical Safety • Internal Electrical burn: Internal burns occur when the electric current takes a path through bone and burns deep tissue.
Electrical Safety • Electrical fires: The flow of electric current produces heat; when heat increases more than defined limit it leads to electric fire.
Electrical Safety • Electrical fires: Electric fires occur when electric current ignites flammable materials.
Electrical Safety • Electrical fires: Electrical fires are extremely dangerous because putting them out with water may expose a person to a higher risk of electric shock.
