BASIC ELECTRICAL SAFETY Part-4 Class IX
Safety • Safety is the condition of being protected against from any consequences of – failure, – damage, – error, – accidents, – harm or – any other event which could be considered nondesirable.
Electrical Safety • The term electrical safety refers to the state of being protected against any kind of electrical accident or hazard.
Electrical Safety • The Complete course of electrical Safety is divided in to five parts: -
Electrical Safety • So far we had learned about electrical safety in three parts • Part-1 – Do’s and don’ts • Part-2 – Risk associated with electricity • Part-3 – Introduction of Protective System/Devices
Electrical Safety • In this part (Part-4) we will learn about Electrical Accident Management. • The “Electrical Accident Management deals with the planning and action in case of occurrence of electrical accident. • There are three major steps for electrical accident management.
Electrical Safety • Electrical Accident Management Step 1 – How to respond an electrical accident (Observe; assess and act)
Electrical Safety • Electrical Accident Management Step 2 – How to control and minimize the after effect of electrical accident.
Electrical Safety • Electrical Accident Management Step 3 – First aid and medical assistance to victim.
Electrical Safety In case of electrical accident: - Before extending helping hand; think of your safety. Ensure you are safe enough. Wear and use protective device before rescue.
Electrical Safety In case of electrical accident: - In case of electrical accident. Do not touch anything just observe for the presence/ availability of electrical supply.
Electrical Safety In case of electrical accident: - Disconnect the electrical supply from main panel, distribution board or MCB installed nearest.
Electrical Safety In case of electrical accident: - Even in absence of light; first disconnect the electrical supply from main panel, distribution board or MCB installed nearest.
Electrical Safety In case of electrical accident: - • Do NOT touch the victim with your bare hands, else the electric current will pass through you as well.
Electrical Safety In case of electrical accident: - • The victim usually gets stuck to the source of the electricity, and it is important that you first separate him from the electrical source.
Electrical Safety In case of electrical accident: - • Use non-conductive material like wood or plastic rod or stick to separate electrical supply source from victim.
Electrical Safety In case of electrical accident: - • Once the victim is separated, check for his/her breathing and burns.
Electrical Safety In case of electrical accident: - • If breathing has stopped or seems slow, administer artificial respiration immediately.
Electrical Safety In case of electrical accident: - • Cover the victim with a blanket.
Electrical Safety In case of electrical accident: - • Move the victim as little as possible. He may have suffered.
Electrical Safety In case of electrical accident: - • Seek Medical help as early as possible.
Electrical Safety -In case of electrical accident with fire protect yourself from all three existing threats – -Electric current, -Fire and -Toxic air.
Electrical Safety In case of electrical accident: - In case of electrical fire, never use water to control the fire. - Use water of will increase the risk many fold.
Electrical Safety In case of electrical accident: - In case of electrical fire use specified fire (Carbon powder) extinguisher or sand to control the fire.
Electrical Safety In case of electrical accident: In case of electrical fire try to stay closer to floor for breath and vision; as smoke moves upward and prevents visibility and breath.
Electrical Safety In case of electrical accident: Cover your nose with handkerchief or cloth, preferable slight wet; to protect inhaling poisonous gas.
Electrical Safety • First Aid & Medical Assistance: The severity of injury caused by Electrical shock or burns depends on following factors: • (1) how long the body is in contact with the electric current;
Electrical Safety • First Aid & Medical Assistance: - • (2) the strength of the current;
Electrical Safety • First Aid & Medical Assistance: - • (3) the type of current; and
Electrical Safety • First Aid & Medical Assistance: - • (4) the direction the current takes through the body.
Electrical Safety • First Aid & Medical Assistance: Victim of electrical accident may show following symptoms – – – – Severe burns Confusion Difficulty breathing Heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias) Cardiac arrest Muscle pain and contractions Seizures Loss of consciousness
Electrical Safety • First Aid & Medical Assistance: • If a person has received an electrical burn, is conscious and there are no signs of shock (such as being cold, clammy, pale and having a rapid pulse), begin treating the burned area.
Electrical Safety • First Aid & Medical Assistance: • The victim may have electrical burn • Internal burns • External burns or • Both
Electrical Safety • First Aid & Medical Assistance: • Electric burns are often deep and occurs on more than one area. • One area may be where the current entered the body and another may be where it left. • Electrical burn wounds may look minor on the outside, but could be severe on the inside.
Electrical Safety • First Aid & Medical Assistance: • Do not apply grease or oil to the burn. • Cover the burn with a dry, sterile dressing, but do not cool the burn.
Electrical Safety • First Aid & Medical Assistance: • If the victim has difficult breathing or not breathing, apply mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. • If the victim has no pulse, begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). (Mouth to mouth resuscitation and CPR learn in separate unit)
Electrical Safety • First Aid & Medical Assistance: • Unconscious victims should be placed on their side to allow drainage of fluids. • Do not move the victim if there is a suspicion of neck or spine injuries unless absolutely necessary.
Electrical Safety • First Aid & Medical Assistance: • Keep the victim from getting chilled. • Seek medical attention as soon as possible.
