Monitoring of Cadmium Contained in Color and Chromium Cosmetics Dong-Gyu KIM, In-Sook HWANG, Hee-Jeong JUNG, Woon-Hee PARK, Bo-Kyung JUNG, Nam-Hoon KIM, In-Sil YU, Young-Zoo CHAE Seoul Metropolitan Government Research Institute of Public Health and Environment, Korea Introduction Color cosmetics are substances used to brighten the appearance of the human body and make the skin look more beautiful. Color cosmetics include face powder, foundation, make-up base, lipstick, body paint etc. If the skin is continuously exposed to hazardous heavy metals contained in cosmetics, it may cause harmful effects. KFDA (Korea Food and Drug Administration) regulates the amount of Pb and As that can be contained in cosmetic products. Pb should be less than 20 ppm and As less than 10 ppm. In addition, there are other hazardous heavy metals such as Cd and Cr that are not regulated but may have bad effects on skin safety. It has been reported that Cd can cause deterioration in immunological function and Cr can cause skin irritations and allergy. Materials and Methods 1. Sample collected - A total of 80 samples were purchased from large discount stores in Seoul 2. Apparatus - Microwave Digestion System (Anton Paar, Mutiwave 3000) - Inductively coupled plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometer (Perkin Elmer Optima 2100 DV) 3. Analysis method of Cd, Cr in color cosmetics Weighing Add Acid • Sample 0. 3 g in Microwave Vessel • HNO 3 8 m. L • H 2 SO 4 1 m. L • HF 0. 5 m. L Heating Microwave Digeter • Stage 1 : Power(1200 W), Ramp(15: 00), Hold(40: 00 min) • Stage 2 : (1200 W), (00: 00), (15: 00 min) • p-Rate : 0. 3 bar/s, IR : 170℃, p: 15 bar Test solution • 50 m. L mass up • Filtration (5 A) ICP-OES • Optima 2100 DV • STD Solution 0, 01, 1, 10 ppm (2% HNO 3) • LOD = 3. 3 * (the mean standard deviation/the individual slope) Research Results Fig. 1. Spectra display 1) LODs were 15 ppb for Cd and 11 ppb for Cr respectively. 2) Cd was detected in three samples (4%) and the concentrations detected were 1) Cd between 2. 1 ppm and 2. 8 ppm. Cr was detected in seven samples (8%) and the concentrations detected were between 1. 8 ppm and 5. 1 ppm, except that the highest Cr concentration was 13, 300 ppm. 3) 13, 300 ppm Cr was detected from "Product A. " In the case of "Product A", “Chromium Oxide Greens (CI 77288) and Chromium Hydroxide Green(CI 77289)" were shown in the section for raw materials. CI is included in the list of 2) Cr the EU-registered cosmetic raw materials. Toxicity of Cr is caused by hexavalent Cr which is a soluble salt. Insoluble trivalent Cr is used as a raw material for cosmetics. 4) The detected concentrations of Cd and Cr were less than the limits for Pb and As by KFDA.
