Starter A trip to the shops with Minnie We’re going shopping with Minnie and her Gran today! What do we need to take with us when we go to the shops?
We need to take money with us when we go to the shops. We can buy things we want with our money. What does buying things mean?
When we buy something we give the shopkeeper some money and they let us have thing we want. Have you ever been to a shop with a grown-up and bought something?
Minnie has been given some money for her birthday. How much money does Minnie have?
Minnie is holding some money. She has a ten pound note. We know this because it has £ 10 written on it. This strange squiggle means pounds.
What is a pound anyway? A pound is just another way of saying 100 pence, or 100 pennies. A hundred pence can look like this:
Or it can look like this: Which would you rather carry in your pocket? It would be hard to carry around our money in pennies all the time. It would also be hard to see how much money we have.
Instead of carrying around 5 pound coins, we use a £ 5 note. Instead of carrying around 20 pound coins, we use a £ 20 note.
Café menu task Minnie and Gran have reached town. First they go into a café to buy a drink and a doughnut. How much is the doughnut? How much is the drink? Drink £ 1 How much money would Minnie and Gran need? ? + Doughnut £ 2 ? = ?

Café menu task The carrot cake costs £ 2. Gran has two 50 p coins and a £ 1 coin. 50 p + 50 p = £ 1 + = How much money does Gran have? Can Gran buy the carrot cake? Did you know? When we write down an amount of money, starting with a £ sign, we don’t need to put a penny sign (p) on the end. So we would write £ 1. 50 instead of £ 1. 50 p.
Café menu task Hot chocolate for two people costs £ 3. Gran has three coins: 50 p, 20 p, £ 2. 50 p + 20 p = £ 2 + = £ 3 - = How much money does Gran have? Can Gran buy the hot chocolate?
Café menu task Two slices of rainbow cake with two drinks costs £ 7. Gran has two £ 5 notes. How much money does Gran have? Can Gran buy the rainbow cake and drinks? Why do you think this?
