6 What is matter? Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space

7 Physics Review Newton’s 1 st law Newton’s 2 nd law An object at rest will stay at rest until acted upon by a force Force equals mass X acceleration Newton’s 3 rd law Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, OR Energy (or matter) is neither created nor destroyed.

8 Why do Equations need to be balanced? Because matter is neither created nor destroyed, The expression we use to tell the story of the reaction needs to show the same # of atoms on both sides For example, If we have two pieces of bread and 3 slices of ham, we would have one ham sandwich. Our equation would be: 2 b + 3 h = 1 2 b 3 h ** same # of atoms on both sides**
