Math Teaching Point: I can solve word problems with more than one step. • Number Talk • Word Problem of the Day • I can solve two-step word problems. • Mini-lesson: Today we will learn how to solve word problems with more than one step. We will talk about clues we can use to decide how many steps we will need to solve a word problem. • Task: Let’s solve some two-step word problems together. You will need your white board.
Reading • Good readers looks for connections between people, events, and ideas when they read. • Mini-Lesson: We will review how we can describe similarities and differences between people, events, and ideas to find connections in our books. • Task: Read nonfiction books on your own and see if you can find compare and contrast connections. Teaching Point: I can find connections when I read.

Writing Teaching Point: I can write to explain how to do something. • Good writers write to inform. • One type of informational writing is how-to paragraphs. • Mini-Lesson: We will begin a short unit today on how-to writing. The purpose of how-to writing is to teach your reader how to complete a task on which you are an expert. • Task: Let’s see what you already know! Write the steps for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Mrs. Hamel will put some of your ideas to the test!
Grammar Teaching Point: I can use an apostrophe correctly in a possessive noun. • Mini-Lesson: We will review what we have learned about contractions. We will also begin learning about possessive nouns, which are nouns that show ownership. When you write a possessive noun, you add an apostrophe and an “s” to the end. For example, the shoe belonging to Mrs. White is Mrs. White’s shoe. • Task: Let’s read The Greedy Apostrophe and watch Brain Pop Jr. to learn more.

Social Studies • Mini-Lesson: Before the break, we learned about the lives of the Cherokee Native American people. We also began learning about one important Cherokee man named Sequoyah created a Cherokee alphabet for his people. • Task: Let’s read Studies Weekly #12 together to review. Teaching Point: I can describe the life and contributions of Sequoyah.
