Sea Turtle Facts • May 23 rd is World Turtle Day! • Largest Leatherback (2, 000 lbs) • Smallest Kemp’s Ridley (80 -100 lbs) • Green sea turtles can hold their breath for up to 5 hours by slowing their heart rate to conserve oxygen (beats once every 9 minutes!)
More Facts! • Temperature affects the gender of the turtle (warmer = females) • With climate change we expect to see an increase in females • Can lay 70 -190 eggs • 1 in 1, 000 eggs make it to adulthood • All seven species of sea turtles are endangered • Bycatch • Boat strikes • Oil Spills - Poaching - Habitat loss - Plastic pollution -Artificial lighting - Mistakenly ingesting plastic
Did you know? • Marine turtles have magnetite crystals, which act just like a compass, are located deep within their brains • This allows marine turtles to use the earth’s magnetic fields to navigate long distances • This feature helps marine turtles identify the location of both their feeding and nesting grounds so they return to the same location they were born to reproduce and nest
