This week, we will focus on informational texts. Authors write informational texts for three purposes – to answer, describe, or explain. • Task: Listen to the video and sort the passages on your own handout. Writing Teaching Point: I can write to inform. • Good writers write to inform readers about a person, place, or thing. • I can write paragraphs to inform my reader about subtopics on an overall main topic. • Mini-Lesson: When we write to inform, we use research to become an expert on our topic. We will use the notes we wrote during our Social Studies lesson last week to write a paragraph about Jimmy Carter’s work helping his hometown of Plains, Georgia. • Task: Write the paragraph on your newspaper using your notes.

Phonics In quarter 4, we will begin learning about how to decode words with more than one syllable. A syllable is a separate sound. Syllables can have long and short vowels. We can use our understanding of long and short vowel sounds to decode harder words. Let’s look at some examples of syllables with long vowel sounds. We call them open syllables. Teaching Point: I can decode words with more than one syllable.
