METRIC CONVERSION How to convert within the metric system © Copyright 2003 - 2004. M. J. Krech. All rights reserved.
The Metric System is based on sets of 10 1 x 10 = 10 10 X 10 = 100 10 x 100 = 1, 000
The Metric System Is used by scientists all over the world!
Naming the Metric Units Meter units measure Length Gram units measure mass or weight Liter units measure volume or capacity.
Metric Benchmarks Help us visualize the Metric System
Length Unit Abbreviation Relation to a meter Benchmark Millimeter mm . 001 m Thickness of a dime Centimeter cm . 01 m Width of a fingernail Decimeter dm . 1 m Width of a CD case Meter m 1 m Width of a single bed Kilometer Km 1, 000 m Distance around a city block
Mass Unit Abbreviation Relation to a gram Benchmark Milligram mg . 001 g Very small insect Gram g 1 g Large paper clip Kilogram kg 1, 000 g Textbook
Capacity Unit Abbreviatio n Relation to a liter Benchmark Milliliter Liter m. L L . 001 L 1 L A drop of water Blender Container
Converting Metric Friends this is going to be SOOOOOOOO Easy!!!!!!
Here’s the gist of it……. To convert from a smaller unit to a larger unit (going to the left) divide by 10 for each step. (Move the decimal one time to the left for each box) Ex: 4 millimeters= 0. 4 centimeters KILO- HECT DEKA UNIT Deci- Centi- Milli. Kilograms Grams Decigrams Centigram Milligrams O(kg) Deciliters s Milliliters Kiloliters (kl) Kilometer s (km) *Not commonly used Hectograms Hectoliters Hectometer s (g) Liter (l) Meter (m) decimeters Centiliters millimeters Centimeter s Deckagra ms Deckaliters Deckamete rs To convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit (going to the right ) multiply by 10 for each box (Move the decimal one time to the right for each step. Ex: 25 kilograms = 25000 grams

U: UNITS KHDUDCM m l g Write the units in the middle under the “U”.
Remember the units! M: L: G:
Let’s add the meter line: KHDUDCM km hm dam m dm cm mm
Let’s add the Liter line: KHDUDCM km k. L hm h. L dam m dm cm mm da. L L d. L c. L m. L Deca can also be dk or da
Let’s add the gram line: KHDUDCM km k. L kg hm dam m dm cm mm h. L hg da. L dag L g d. L dg c. L cg m. L mg
Let’s add the gram line: k h d U d c m km kl kg hm hl hg dam m dal l dag g dm dl dg cm cl cg mm ml mg
Metric Recipe 1. Look at the problem. Look at the unit that has a number. On the device put your pencil on that unit. 2. Move to new unit, circle it counting jumps and noticing the direction of the jump. 3. Move decimal in original number the same # of spaces and in the same direction.
One last caution: Be careful NOT to count the spot you start from, where you put your pencil point. Only count the jumps!
Example #1: (1) Look at the problem. 56 cm = _____ mm Look at the unit that has a number. 56 cm On the device put your pencil on that unit. k h km hm d U dam m d dm c cm m mm
Example #1: 2. Move to new unit, counting jumps and noticing the direction of the jump! k h d U d km hm dam m dm c cm One jump to the right! m mm
Example #1: 3. Move decimal in original number the same # of spaces and in the same direction. 56 cm = _____ mm 56. 0. One jump to the right! Move decimal one jump to the right. Add a zero as a placeholder.
Example #1: 56 cm = _____ mm 56 cm = 560 mm
Example #2: Look at the problem. 7. 25 L = ____ k. L Look at the unit that has a number. 7. 25 L On the device put your pencil on that unit. (1) k h d U d c kl hl dal L dl cl m ml
Example #2: 2. Move to new unit, counting jumps and noticing the direction of the jump! k h d kl hl dal U L d c dl cl m ml Three jumps to the left!
Example #2: (3) Move decimal in original number the same # of spaces and in the same direction. 7. 25 L = ____ k. L . 007. 25 Three jumps to the left! Move decimal to the left three jumps. Add two zeros as placeholders.
Example #2: 7. 25 L = ____ k. L 7. 25 L =. 00725 k. L
Examples #3 -7: (3) 35 mm = ____ cm (4) 14, 443 L = ____ k. L (5) 0. 00056 kg = ____ g (6)35. 4 L = ____ m. L (7)16 mm = ____ km
