SCIENTIFIC METHOD PRACTICE (PUT IN NOTEBOOK) Mary investigated the effect of different concentrations of Miracle Grow on the growth of tomato plants. Mary hypothesized that if higher concentrations of Miracle Grow were added, the plants would exhibit poorer growth. She grew four groups of tomato plants (10 plants/group) for 30 days. She then applied Miracle Grow as follows: Group A, 0% Miracle Grow; Group B, 10% Miracle Grow; Group C, 20% Miracle Grow; and Group D, 30% Miracle Grow. The plants received the same amount of sunlight and water each day. At the end of 30 days, Mary recorded the height of the plants (in centimeters) and the color of the leaves (green, yellow-green, yellow, or brown. )

SCIENTIFIC METHOD PRACTICE #2 Sandy heard that plants compete for space. She decided to test this idea. She bought a mixture of flower seeds and some potting soil. Into each of 5 plastic cups she put the same amount of soil. In the first cup she planted 2 seeds, in the second cup she planted 4 seeds, in the third cup 8 seeds, and in the fourth cup she planted 16 seeds. In the last cup she planted 32 seeds. After 25 days, she determined which set of plants looked best. Identify the variables: IV, DV, Constants, Control Group

9/1/15 Each summer, Janine spends two weeks visiting her grandparents, who live near a beach. She notices that the shore in one area appears to erode more each year than any other area. Which of the following would be the best way to determine if different areas of this beach experience more erosion than others each year? A. B. C. D. Find out what factors contribute most to the erosion of the beach year. Compare the physical features of this beach to those of beaches in other towns. Take photographs of all areas of the beach over several years to look objectively for differences. Survey the residents who live near the beach year round to see if they notice any changes in erosion.

BELLRINGER NUMBER 2 9/3/15 Corey is analyzing samples of two compounds. Through scientific experimentation, she has determined that the compounds are types of CFCs, or chlorofluorocarbons, which are environmental pollutants that contain the elements carbon (C), chlorine (Cl), and fluorine (F). She now wants to determine if the two samples have the same concentration of the elements Cl and F. The table below shows the mass, in grams (g), of Cl and F in each sample. Which of the following is the best explanation of Corey's data? a. Both compound samples have more chlorine than fluorine. b. Sample 1 has a greater concentration of fluorine than Sample 2. c. Sample 1 has a greater concentration of chlorine than Sample 2. d. Both samples have the same concentration of chlorine and fluorine.

Which of the following is the best way to set up the groups of participants in the clinical trials? A. B. C. D. There should be twenty groups, each taking a different dosage of the drug, and each group should consist of one man and one woman. There should be two groups of participants: one consisting of only women who are taking the drug, and the other of men who are not taking the drug. There should be five groups, with four taking a different dosage of the drug and one not taking any drugs, and each group should consist of one hundred randomly assigned participants. There should be two groups of participants: one consisting of men and women who already have osteoporosis and are taking the drug, and the other of men and women without osteoporosis who are not taking the drug.
