Monday 10 th February WALT: Know how quotes are used in a news report
We are going to look at how quotes are used in a news report. Quotations tell us what has been said and who has said it. They can help to make the story believable by giving the reader the opinions of the people involved. Remember to use inverted commas! Quotes in a news report are always written as direct speech.
Inverted Commas The most important rule in punctuating direct speech is that all words spoken must be enclosed by inverted commas. For example “It was an amazing day and we didn’t want it to end, ” commented Billy.
All commas, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks must also be enclosed by inverted commas. “That grass looks delicious, ” said the smallest Billy Goat Gruff. “Hey, goat!” shouted the troll. “You are not allowed to cross my bridge. ” “How can we get to the other side? ” asked the Biggest Goat Gruff. “Get off my bridge”! shouted the troll.

Here are some ideas: Jim’s nurse said resentfully, “He never did as he was told. He was always running away. It’s his own fault. ” “I was absolutely shocked when I saw Ponto eating the poor boy. I rushed to get Ponto off him, but it was too late, ” commented the zookeeper, Fred Smith. Jim’s distraught mother cried, “I knew he was naughty boy, but the nurse should have looked after him properly. ” “I am going to sue the zoo. This should not have happened!” raged Jim’s father.
