CALVINISTS v. Taught that God was the only one that could determine whether you go to heaven or not v. Predestination: idea that God determined long time ago whether or not you go to heaven • Means that nothing you do can change this fact
ANGLICANS v. Henry VIII created the Anglican church because of his anger that the pope would not grant him a divorce v. Follows the principles of Martin Luther and protests the Roman Catholic church
HENRY VIII v. Because of the pope’s refusal, Henry VIII closed down all monasteries and convents and seized their land. v. Convinced the upper class to support his church by offering them a high standing in society
RELIGIOUS TURMOIL v. Mary Tudor took over after Henry VIII died. She was Catholic so she forced England to be Catholic v. Elizabeth I was protestant, so England became protestant again when she came in power • She came into power by imprisoning her sister.
RELIGIOUS TURMOIL v. Mary imprisoned her sister Elizabeth and took power once again. v. After Mary died, Elizabeth came into power and wrote a document of religious compromise • She kept Catholic traditions but established England was Protestant
CATHOLIC REFORMATION v. After Luther called out the Catholic Church, Pope Paul III decided to appoint reformers and fix the church • Stiff penalties for sins that the leaders of the church committed v. Still defended its teachings and principles of faith
PERSECUTION v Catholic mobs killed and attacked Protestants v Protestants killed Catholic priests and destroyed Catholic churches v Witchcraft and devil worship was on the rise v Luther tried to convince Jews to convert to Christianity and banned them and burned their synagogues if they didn’t
