Mole Triangle Quiz Finish “Air Bag” Lab, Stoichiometry Problems Chemistry 3/20/15
Drill • Chem Joke of the Day • The photon checked into a hotel. What did it say when the bellhop asked for its bag? • “No bags—I’m travelling light!” Phone in the box! What three things can a mole be converted into? How? What if you’re converting g L? ? How do moles come into play? HW: Sodium hypobromite
Objectives IWBAT Calculate moles, grams, and particles using the mole triangle Discuss the “air bag” experiment Calculate mole ratios for balanced equations Don’t forget about 3/23 (Monday!) is our next Lion Time Mole Project due Tuesday, 3/24
Agenda Drill Quiz HW Review Finish Lab Qs More Stoichiometry Closure
Mole Triangle Quiz You need Pencil or pen Calculator Green periodic table Your brain
HW Review Let’s put up Mole Ratios/ Mole-Mole Stoich problems on the boards
Lab Analysis On the back of the sheet, copy down the chemical equation. 1. Calculate the moles of Na. HCO 3 used in your MOST successful trial, starting with the mass. 2. Calculate the moles of CO 2 produced from that number of moles of Na. HCO 3, starting with your answer for #1. 3. Calculate the volume of CO 2 produced, if the reaction took place at STP, starting with your answer for #2. 4. Compare the volume calculated in #3 to the volume you measured for the bag. Discuss. 5. Keep this to help with the next activity. Ms.
Investigative Question What is the process required to calculate the mass, volume, or quantity of particles using various stoichiometric methods?
Mixed Conversions Group Inquiry
Group Work • The class will be separated into small • • groups. Each group will be given a • mixed conversion stoichiometry word problem • white board and marker You will work in your group to solve the word problem. You will have approx. 7 -10 min. to work. When done, write your work, including reaction, units and labels, on a large sheet of paper. Remember to write large
Groups 1 Braswell, Christopher MBurns, Jakim N Yarrish, Stephanie R Thompson, Kayla A Noack, Evan T Fellers, Cassidy GWeir, Kaitlyn M Von Neida, Jacob H 2 3 Rhinevault, Brittany C Johnston, Dylan DJordan, Amoyiah Lou CWatson, Ashley N Maharjan, Bini Sraver, Madison L Blackburn, Brett W 4 Walsh, Tessa J 5 Carpenter, Benjamin J O'Neill, Courtney Faulkner, James P Clary, Anna W Marshall, John N Boyd, Scott C Federline, Brianna K 6
Reminders Things that might be helpful to look at while you solve your problem: Mole diagram calculations
To Do List Tape the word problem to the front of the poster paper. Write the problem number (in large font) in the top left corner of the paper. Write your names on the back of the paper. When you are done, bring the poster paper and marker to the teacher.
Time to Share It’s time to share with the entire class. Pick up a copy of the Mixed Conversion Problems worksheet. You may take notes on the Mixed Conversion Problems worksheet.
Time to Share I will choose a group to present. The group will come up to the front of the room, attach the poster paper to the board and then explain how the problem is solved. Be prepared to explain each step of the problem, including units and labels, and how you know that your process is correct.
