Protection § Protection in humanitarian action is fundamentally about keeping people safe from the harm that others may cause them. § It aims to ensure the rights of individuals are respected, to preserve the safety, physical integrity and dignity of those affected by natural disasters or other emergencies, armed conflict or other situations of violence. ü Protection is about rights ü Protection is about improving safety ü Protection is about dignity (feel valued, respected, in control of life) ü Protection is about vulnerabilities (exposure to risks) Module 8 PROTECTION, GENDER & INCLUSION

Sex or gender? § Sex: refers to the biological differences between men and women § Gender (as a concept): refers to the social differences between men and women and relate to the attitudes, behaviors, roles and expectations put on men and women as a result of being male or female § Although deeply rooted in every culture, these social differences between females and males are changeable over time and are different both within and between cultures. § Gender determines the roles, power and resources for females and males in any culture. Defining disability § Disability results from the interaction between persons with impairments and the attitudinal and environmental barriers that hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others. § Persons with disabilities include those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments. Disability inclusion in RCRC § is both a process and an outcome § considers disability as a normal part of human diversity § ensures people with disability meaningfully participate in emergency programming activities § ensures people with disability equally benefit from emergency programming § leads to broader benefits for people with disability themselves, their families and communities.
