Why set objectives? • Form basis of instructional plan • Focus on what participants should value, understand, or do • Help participants understand what is expected of them • Means of measurement • State planned outcome (results)
Types of Objectives • Affective (Attitude) • Behavioral (Skills) • Cognitive (Knowledge)

Characteristics of Learning Objectives • Objective & measurable (quantitative & qualitative) • Results-oriented • Focus on important aspects of job • Action-oriented • Written in terms of performance
Characteristics of Learning Objectives (continued) • Specific about what participants will be able to do • Describe participants’ behavior or performance • Specific about learning conditions • Indicate minimum acceptable level of performance
3 Components to an Objective: • Performance - behavior that can be observed (What? ) • Condition - circumstances of the activity (How? ) • Criteria - degree of proficiency necessary to perform activity (How Measured? )
