How do you say chores? • We will be learning how to use the “Los Quehaceres Vocabulario” to talk about household chores! • We will also discuss ways to express obligation in Spanish using 1. Tener que 2. Hay que 3. Deber • In Spanish there a few different ways to refer to “chores” • Quehaceres • Tareas domesticas • Las tareas del hogar • Los oficios de la casa

Hay que + infinitivo • The word HAY comes from the infinitive form of

Hay que + infinitivo • The word HAY comes from the infinitive form of the verb HABER which means “there is / there are”. • But, when “hay” is accompanied by ”que” it means “to have (to do something)”. • HAY QUE is usually used to exoress obligation without giving ownership as to who has to do something. • EX) “Hay que cocinar” means “Someone has to cook”

Tener que + infinitivo • As you know, the verb TENER means “to have

Tener que + infinitivo • As you know, the verb TENER means “to have (something)”. *TENER is a stem changing verb so do not forget to stem change in the (especially in the “yo” form)* • To formulate our sentence, we will use the structure Sujeto + Tener (conjugated) + que + infinitive (chore or any other task) E. g. “(Nosotros) Tenemos que limpiar la casa” “We have to clean the house”

Deber + infinitivo • We use the regular verb DEBER to say ”you must”

GUSTAR The regular verb GUSTAR means ”to like”, when we add “no” in front

GUSTAR The regular verb GUSTAR means ”to like”, when we add “no” in front of it we are expressing dislike. GUSTAR with a direct object pronoun and a prepositional phrase is typically how we express our likes. • EX) “A mí me gusta futbol” • “I like soccer” • ** “A mÍ (to me)” is an optional prepositional phrase, ME is the corresponding direct object pronoun for YO and GUSTA is one of the forms of GUSTAR.
