MODULE 3. NON-STANDARD ESC PRACTICES
What is the plan for this module? Review and talk about the non-standard practices out there: 1. The adaptations of and to the current ESCH practices 2. Natural and biological practices 3. The more mechanical practices 4. Chemical practices Also include what surrounding States are doing/ allowing.
So, why use Non-Standard Practices? Reason Yes Green Book is outdated Used it elsewhere Left overs Small site Redevelopment Discharge issues Spaghetti Good sales man x x No x x x
The site is small • The practice (i. e. , sediment trap or basin) does not fit is there an alternative? • By using a standard practice we are taking up too much room
There may not be a standard drainage way to discharge into • The site is landlocked and only drains to stormwater utility • There is no real drainage way nearby to discharge into • It is a smaller (isolated) project on a large property, but it still needs permitting
This is a redevelopment project • • What is underneath? What are we disturbing? Can we place silt fence on asphalt? Do we have the space?
There a lot of issues underground • (or on the surface) • Utility lines (note that Ms. Utility might not be able to locate all of them, especially in older areas • Root of old legacy trees • When placing a new structure on an already developed area (i. e. , an existing parking lot)
Concluding: In most cases these are: • Lot of overlap • Small projects • Infill lots • Urban lots • Redevelopment projects It is often what is underneath that counts
Non-Standard Practices DEQ does not specifically endorse, approve or prefer any of these measures over any others. They should be used on a case-by-case basis DEQ does not specifically recommend, endorse, approve or prefer this any of these practices over any others. They should be used on a case-by-case basis!

Innovative Measures Natural/Biological Practices
Compost What is compost? • Well decomposed organic materials • Provides organic matter (>35%) • Nutrients • Micro-organisms
Compost What is the function of compost? • In the soil – Provides organic matter (>35%) • • Opens up the soil Glues the soil particles together Prevents nutrients from leaching out (CEC) Feeds micro-organisms – Provides nutrients – May provide some micro-organisms • Compost logs • Compost berms DEQ does not specifically recommend, endorse, approve or prefer this any of these practices over any others. They should be used on a case-by-case basis!
Compost Blankets • Seed infused directly into the compost and applied by blower truck • Compost blankets are typically applied at 1” to 2” depth up to 2: 1 slopes • Some companies sell compost blankets establish turf quicker reducing soil loss for better erosion control than traditional methods DEQ does not specifically recommend, endorse, approve or prefer this any of these practices over any others. They should be used on a case-by-case basis!

Innovative Measures Chemical Processes
What do polyacrylamides do? • Polyacrylamides causes the flocculation of microscopically small (insoluble) particles (clays). They come together to form flocs or flakes that get heavy enough to drop out of suspension. DEQ does not specifically recommend, endorse, approve or prefer this any of these practices over any others. They should be used on a case-by-case basis!

In Summary • There are many alternatives out there. • Many claim to be better, than the practices in the ESCH (Green Book). • They may be worth a try/approving In the next module we will look at the process of allowing their use and inspection
