To be successful we need to be: • Confident – You are certain of your: • abilities (what you are able to do), • skills ( applied knowledge/ what you have learned through training) • Knowledge (what you know) • Have self-confidence - You believe in your • abilities • skills • capabilities • Have self-esteem – Having self-respect and value your worth • Have a positive self-image – A mental picture or view you have of yourself 3
LO 1. 1. 1 Explain the benefits of being confident and having a positive self-image • You know your strengths and weaknesses and where to get help • You don’t feel threatened by other achievements • If you see yourself positively other will also • You are able to see the positive side of a situation • You evaluate failure neutrally and learn from them • You have good interpersonal skills • You take responsibility for your own health and relationships • You are not afraid to try new things 4
LO 1. 1. 2 Identify strengths and abilities in a personal SWOT analysis • SWOT is the acronym for: S – Strengths: Your strong personal qualities/character, abilities (talents), skills, values W – Weaknesses: Your limitations, faults, vulnerabilities O – Opportunities: Trend, developments, support T – Treats Obstacles, difficulties 5

Never talk negatively about yourself. Talk to people who build you up. Negative thoughts. Forgive yourself for mistakes. Accept compliments. Feeling lonely, rejected inferior. Actively resit self-centredness and reach out to others. Reread your list of strengths and good qualities. Don’t strive for perfection, strive for excellence. Believing negative things about yourself. Choose to be positive. What others say about you should never be final. Seek for your own spiritual believe. Set realistic goals. Having no real spiritual believe. Having no fixed values to guide your decisions. Have values and have respect for yourself. Take responsibility for your own words, behaviour and actions. Try to make the right decisions in every situation. 7
Factors that affect self-esteem negatively Ways to counter these Negative relationships Resist temptations that may lead to addictive behaviour. Don’t style your life around the approval of others. Don’t fear rejection or doing something on your own. Be assertive. Undeveloped or poorly developed Skills Learn a new skill or hobby. Never be too shy to ask for help. Don’t strife for perfection, strife for excellence. Poor Physical attributes Go for a walk, exercise and eat a healthy diet. Give yourself every morning a compliment when looking in the mirror. Poor Circumstances Face your setbacks and disappointment, it will make you stronger. Don’t let other take advantage of you. 8
LO 1. 1. 4 Explain the meaning and value of selfmotivation What is self-motivation? • It means you are enthusiastic and willing to perform an activity without being persuaded by someone to do it. To endure even if it becomes difficult. 9
The table below shows examples that can contribute to a person’s self-motivation. Intrinsic motivation (coming from within) Extrinsic motivation (coming from the outside) Doing something for the enjoyment and pleasure of it. Just want to do your work and earn a salary. Being curious (enquiring) about the task. Just wanting to meet needs, such as the need or food security or an income. Enjoy challenges. Having to get a qualification, such as a diploma or degree. Being interested in mastering the task. Expecting a financial reward. Wanting to have greater control of a task. Competing for a prize or reward. Wanting to create order in a situation. Aiming to impress someone. Wanting to prove to yourself that you can do it. Doing work in the hope to get a promotion. Wanting to be creative and independent. Seeking recognition, honour and fame. 10
LO 1. 1. 4 The value of self-motivation • You are motivated into action. • You remain committed. • You don’t need external persuasion to prevent you from quitting. • You do things for your own reasons such as responsibility. • The reason for completing a task is a sense of accomplishment. • You find it easier to reach other goals in future. • You will attract success. • You will be able to work independently. 11
LO 1. 1. 5 Provide examples of self-motivation • I face an examination as a challenge. • I finish my assignments in good time, and hand it in on time. • I attend classes regularly, even if nobody is checking on me. • I don’t see failures as the end of the world. • I find out more about things. • I set realistic achievable goals. 12
LO 1. 1. 5 Strategies to motivate oneself • • • Think if you have the abilities and skills to complete the task. Decide if it is a priority in your life. Divide a task into manageable portions. Plan your timetable well to allow time for rest. Take action after you have planned well. Measure your progress as you go along. Choose a positive mental attitude. Be accountable to someone, report back to someone Be prepared to work hard. Plan for setbacks. Use external motivators to reward yourself. 13
