MODULE 1 INTERAGENCY GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE CASE MANAGEMENT TRAINING
MODULE 8 GUIDING PRINCIPLES & ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Identify the guiding principles for GBV case management OBJECTIVES Understand your role as a caseworker To be aware of your responsibilities as a caseworker
GUIDING PRINCIPLES • Right to safety • Right to confidentiality • Right to dignity and self-determination • Non-discrimination
GUIDING PRINCIPLES Right to safety • Physical and emotional safety • All case actions safeguard the well-being of the survivor
GUIDING PRINCIPLES Right to confidentiality • Confidential collection of information during interviews • Sharing information happens on a need-to-know basis or in line with laws and policies • Permission is obtained from the survivor before sharing information • When making a referral, only details relevant are shared, and only with the permission of the survivor • Case information is stored securely
GUIDING PRINCIPLES Right to dignity and self-determination • Validating, non-blaming and non-judgmental approach • Value the survivor and care about their experience, history and future • Survivor makes decisions about care and this is valued and upheld
GUIDING PRINCIPLES Non-discrimination • Every adult or child, regardless of her/his sex should be accorded equal care and support • Survivors should receive equal and fair treatment regardless of their race, religion, nationality, or sexual orientation
ACTIVITY: ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Using the guiding principles we just discussed as a framework, discuss as a group what you see as the role and responsibilities of the caseworker.
CASEWORKER’S ROLE • Primary role as a guide or facilitator of a process that involved the survivor’s disclosure, learning, decision-making, action and personal transformation • Manage the survivor’s expectations and their own; caseworkers may not be able to find solutions to all of the survivor’s needs • Use power with rather than power over
CASEWORKER’S RESPONSIBILITIES • Apply knowledge of GBV to their work and provide information to survivors about the violence they experienced that may help in their recovery • Communicate with survivors in a way that builds rapport and trust and promotes their healing and recovery. • Carry out case management steps and procedures • Identify strengths and assets the survivor has • Nurture, comfort and provide emotional support to survivors
ACTIVITY: PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER - Think about the guiding principles and the role and responsibilities of a caseworker. What did I do well as a caseworker? What did I not do well? How do you think this may impact the survivor?
