Modified Atwood’s Machine Lab • Purpose: To determine the relationship between the Acceleration of the object and the mass of the object. Groups: 2, 4 , 6 , 8

Apparatus and Procedure: § List of items § Labeled diagram § Procedure: 1. 2. Etc.

Data Table: (Groups 1, 3, 5, 7, 9) (Groups: 2, 4, 6, 8) Constant: Mass______ Kg Net Force (N) Accel (m/s^2) Constant: Force_____N Mass (kg) Acceleration(m/s^2)

Evaluation of Data: Groups 2, 4, 6, 8: Calculated data All groups: Graph(s) and math model+5%

Conclusion: In complete sentences and in paragraph form include the following information. (Groups 1, 3, 5, 7, 9) : Relationship of variables, general equation, definition of variables in general equation, define & meaning of slope, define & meaning of y-intercept with data for both. (Groups: 2, 4, 6, 8): Relationship of variables, general equation, definition of variables in general equation, define & meaning of slope, define & meaning of y-intercept with data for both. . Terms: Newton’s Second Law, Newton Error Analysis:

Conclusion (Groups 1, 3, 5, 7, 9) Acceleration vs. Net Force Acceleration is proportional to Force General equation: a = (1/mass)FNet Slope Meaning: define and means 1/mass Y-int Acceleration when the FNet = 0 and meaning Your data Terms Error

Conclusion (Groups: 2, 4, 6, 8) Acceleration vs. Mass Acceleration is inversely proportional to Mass General equation: a = (FNet) 1/mass Slope define and meaning: Fnet Y-int Acceleration when the Mass = or 1/mass approaches zero. Meaning= Your data Terms Error

Terms Newton’s 2 nd Law of Motion The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to Net Force applied to the object and inversely proportional to the mass of the object. The acceleration is always in the direction of the FNet. Therefore: Fnet (N) = mass(kg) x acceleration (m/s^2) or F = ma Newton- The amount of force required to accelerate a 1 kg object at a rate of 1 m/s 2. Units: N = kg·m/s 2
