Modern Studies – Enquiry Skills Question Type: Selective in the use of facts To be selective in the use of facts: To make statements which may be true, untrue or partly true.

• A selective in the use of facts question will ask you to identify when someone is making statements that may be true, untrue or partly true. • We will always use the term support/oppose

What I need to do? • All the question is asking you to do is: – Identify the parts of the sources that support the statement, and show that some parts of it are true (not being selective) – Identify the parts of the sources that contradict or disprove the statement and show that some parts of it are false. (being selective)

Linking Sources • Another very important part of answering these questions is to LINK THE SOURCES! • This means, if more than one sources back up your point, that the person is being selective or not – USE THEM BOTH!

REMEMBER!!!! • To achieve full marks, you MUST include evidence in your answer that supports the view AND evidence that doesn’t support the view. If you only include one type of evidence you cannot get any more than six marks.

How to remember this. . . • Use this structure to ‘SEEL’ in your answer. • Statement – In your first statement say whether this is a paragraph that supports/opposes the source and refer to the statement. • Evidence – Refer to your first piece of source evidence here. Source 1/2/3 says that ‘……’ • Evidence – Refer to your second piece of source evidence here. This is backed up in Source 1/2/3 where says that ‘…. ’ • Link – Explain the evidence in your own words and link it to the words of the statement.

Greg James is being fairly selective in the use of facts when he says “The Brits have barely made any impact on the charts. ” Source 2 shows us that the best selling single of the last 5 years was by Adele who is British, and sold 1, 488, 000 million singles. This is backed up in Source 3 as it also explains that “Some UK artists have had successes such as Adele and Calvin Harris” This shows that Greg James is being fairly selective in his use of facts as British artists have made an impact on the charts in the last 5 years. However Greg James is not being selective in the use of facts when he says ”Pharrell Williams has been one of the most successful artists in the last 5 years” L I number 1 since 2010 as he was at the top of the charts for 13 weeks. N Similarly, source 2 shows us that Pharrell has been involved K Source 1 shows that Pharrell has had the most weeks at with 2 of the best selling singles since 2010, selling 2, 737, 000 records. Greg James is also not being selective in the use of facts when he says that “Pretty much all of the best sellers or most successful artists are American” Source 1 shows that 3 of the 5 most successful artists are Americans, and Source 3 explains that “The UK Charts have been dominated by American artists. ” This shows that Americans have had major successes in music in the UK, proving that Greg James is not being selective in the use of facts.
