IMPORTANT!! VITAL!! READ THIS!! • It is important to understand that this presentation is not meant to give a model that has to be implemented by every coach. The point of it is to give an example of how themes covered in the coaching curriculum can be successfully integrated into a 7 appointment program using the resources available in the coaching modules. • Also, many students may not be required to attend 7 appointments so it is up to the coach to prioritize themes to choose the ones that best fit the student’s needs • Coaches should be encouraged to adopt their own style and use the resources that they think will be most applicable for the student that they are working with.

APPOINTMENT 1 • Building rapport with the student in the first appointment should be

APPOINTMENT 1 • Building rapport with the student in the first appointment should be a primary goal. • Slow is smooth, smooth is fast: Rushing into resources can be intimidating and overwhelming, especially for incoming freshmen that haven’t fully grasped college life • Can also put pressure on the coach to fill the time and lead to the students using a large portions of the appointment working on filling out worksheets • A majority of students don’t know what coaching is and are likely not very excited to be there. It is important to establish what coaching is and how it can help them early. • Motivating the students is key before you can ever expect to have any kind of impact or provoke change. • Outline the new curriculum- show that coaching is a system and that each appointment is connected to the others and are designed to build good habits from the ground up

APPOINTMENT 1 • Intake • The intake can feel long and arbitrary, but doesn’t

APPOINTMENT 1 • Intake • The intake can feel long and arbitrary, but doesn’t have to • Rather than seeing it as a list of questions, the coach can use it as talking points to get to know the student • Talking about values may be uncomfortable, but students are in fact humans, there are other things, and possibly more important things going on in their lives than just class. It is important to understand that and gain as sense of empathy before moving on to goal setting/time management/ etc. • Academics: If the student has been in college for more than a semester they will probably know their shortcomings in the classroom, let them explain it to you and make them realize that they do need to adjust their habits. (MI) • For freshmen this is a good opportunity to get their opinion on what they think they did well in High School and how they think college classes might be different. (Transition into curriculum)

APPOINTMENT 1 • Where do you see yourself… • This document is a good

APPOINTMENT 1 • Where do you see yourself… • This document is a good starting point for goal setting • Short Term: good place to begin some semester goals (at least 3) can encompass both academic and outside of class… gives coach a reference point to refer back to throughout the semester. . Make a plan for how to achieve the goals, check back frequently throughout the semester, adjust when needed… treating it as an ongoing project will teach students how to set goals, stick with them, and adjust so that they can use the skill past the one semester that they are in coaching

APPOINTMENT 1 • Where do you see yourself • 1 Year from now: this

APPOINTMENT 1 • Where do you see yourself • 1 Year from now: this is a good place to talk about professional development or other things outside of the classroom that may be beneficial • Internships/ Jobs/ Students organizations

APPOINTMENT 1 • Where do you see yourself • 5 years from now: This

APPOINTMENT 1 • Where do you see yourself • 5 years from now: This is where the goals are broader and may not seem applicable but 5 years from now is a good place to talk about what they think their plans might be upon graduation. Obviously subject to change, but this is the kind of long term goals that give students direction. They are going to college so that they can launch a career upon graduation, if that is not the case some reassessment is needed. Show that the short term goals are building blocks to get them to where they want to go.

APPOINTMENT 1 • Where do you see yourself • 10 and 20 years from

APPOINTMENT 1 • Where do you see yourself • 10 and 20 years from now… This one can be very broad because none of us know what we will be doing 20 years from now. It does get students thinking about what will make them happy in their career and in life. Big picture stuff • Don’t have to get too deep with this one, but it is worth talking about so that you can emphasize how 20 year plans don’t just happen, they take planning and working to achieve short term/ one year/ five year/ and ten year goals which act as building blocks to get you to where you want to be.

APPOINTMENT 1 • Weekly Schedule • The weekly schedule is a great time management

APPOINTMENT 1 • Weekly Schedule • The weekly schedule is a great time management resource and it is always nice to allow students to take something away with them • Print out and introduce the weekly schedule • The document outlines your entire week in half hour blocks, in the next week, start thinking about how you use those blocks now and what changes you can make to be most efficient with those blocks • Mention that you will be going into greater detail for time management in the following appointment

APPOINTMENT 2 • Check in on classes, address any questions or concerns • Be

APPOINTMENT 2 • Check in on classes, address any questions or concerns • Be sure to talk about the importance of time management before you move into actually working with the resources • The foundation for the entire program • If you can’t manage your time effectively you will not be effective

APPOINTMENT 2 • Semester Grid • Broadest form of time management- creating a desk

APPOINTMENT 2 • Semester Grid • Broadest form of time management- creating a desk calendar that outlines the large assignments for the entire semester • So nothing “sneaks up” on them • If they use this resource actively there is really no excuse for planning ahead for large assignments other than they just didn’t want to

APPOINTMENT 2 • Weekly Schedule • Core of time management • On the computer,

APPOINTMENT 2 • Weekly Schedule • Core of time management • On the computer, color in blocks that the student is in class or will have other weekly commitments such as campus organizations or a job • This creates a template for what every week should look like that semester • Print it out for use in the appointment and be sure to email it to the student so that they can print it at home • You can also print it out at any point throughout the 7 appointments- particularly helpful in finals prep

APPOINTMENT 2 • Weekly schedule • With the printed document be sure to show

APPOINTMENT 2 • Weekly schedule • With the printed document be sure to show the student all of the free time that they have • Managing your time responsibly is by far the best stress reliever • Time is your most precious commodity because it seems like you never have enough and you can’t get it back • Leaving yourself enough time for academics will be an important part when we start talking about active learning and active studying • From the template you can begin to talk about how the student can develop a routine

APPOINTMENT 2 • Weekly Schedule • Developing a routine • Talk about when the

APPOINTMENT 2 • Weekly Schedule • Developing a routine • Talk about when the most effective times to do homework and to study would be • Use daylight hours • Use chunked sessions- if you plan to do it in large chunks you will gradually lose interest and underperform • Insert wellness into the routine by discussing times when they can take breaks/ eat/ exercise/ get to bed at a reasonable time • Talk to the student about how they can develop good habits by setting goals for their blocks of time on the weekly schedule and sticking to those goals • If the student is not performing as well as you they wanted, the weekly schedule is the first thing you can refer back to. See if they’re sticking to their routine

APPOINTMENT 3 • By the third appointment the students should have a feel for

APPOINTMENT 3 • By the third appointment the students should have a feel for their classes • A good time to stop and make a goal for each individual class • The goal can be a grade, but make sure to talk about and develop a plan for what they think they need to do to achieve that goal… The real goal is then sticking to that plan not the grade itself… having just a goal of just getting a decent grade doesn’t work well with the concept of mastery based learning

APPOINTMENT 3 • Connect time management- last week we talked about how to use

APPOINTMENT 3 • Connect time management- last week we talked about how to use your free time efficiently, now we are going to talk about how to most efficiently use the time you spend in class. • Active Learning- Understanding and retaining as much as you can the first time you learn it rather than trying to relearn it in the days leading up to an exam

APPOINTMENT 3 • Note taking • Discuss how the student takes notes and why

APPOINTMENT 3 • Note taking • Discuss how the student takes notes and why they think it is important to take good notes • Introduce different note taking styles • Outline will be the most commonly used • Discuss the others and why they might be effective • The point is not how you take notes, its how you learn • Writing more rather than less is always a good idea- gives you something to refer back to

APPOINTMENT 3 • Rather than seeing notes as getting down information to be studied

APPOINTMENT 3 • Rather than seeing notes as getting down information to be studied later and then thrown away, students should see notes as part of the learning process • Both notes on lecture and on reading • A necessary tool for performing well in any class • In many cases it is the only opportunity that a student has to work with the content prior to being tested over it

APPOINTMENT 3 Fri: Wed: Mon: 60 % When students are not using mastery based

APPOINTMENT 3 Fri: Wed: Mon: 60 % When students are not using mastery based learning they are only retaining a portion of each day’s content and have to go back and fill gaps when studying. Trying to learn concepts that you didn’t understand the first time the night before the test can cause problems 100 % Mastery learning allows you to identify the gaps in your knowledge as you are learning so that you can fill them before moving on to new content. Allows you ask questions to professor/classmates/ tutors. Studying then becomes brushing up on details rather than trying to learn major concepts.

APPOINTMENT 3 • Mastery Learning Section 1: getting the bulk of the content. Notes

APPOINTMENT 3 • Mastery Learning Section 1: getting the bulk of the content. Notes taken in class on what the student views as the most important content. Doesn’t have to write everything but always nice to have material to refer back to Section 2: Separate major concepts from small details that make up the concepts. This can be done after class. These concepts are the important things to learn the first time you are introduced to them. Also identify any questions that you have over the material. These are the gaps in your knowledge and it is important to get them filled before the next class so that the gaps don’t accumulate. Section 3: Summarize/Synthesize/ Teach- if you can explain the concepts to someone that has no prior knowledge, you are ready to move on. This will identify gaps and let you know if you need to go back and spend more time with the content

APPOINTMENT 3 • This system of learning is probably completely new to most students

APPOINTMENT 3 • This system of learning is probably completely new to most students so it is always a good idea to plan an activity that forces them to practice it. • Take notes on a Sal Khan video about mastery learning • Walk through cornell step by step

APPOINTMENT 4 • Plan to revisit goals in some way- If they are going

APPOINTMENT 4 • Plan to revisit goals in some way- If they are going through their first round of exams it may be a good time to talk about strengths/weaknesses in each class and revisit the goals set in appointment 3 • Study Skills • Thomas Frank has a good video to introduce everything you need to know about active studying

APPOINTMENT 4 • Important to incorporate time management and mastery learning into the study

APPOINTMENT 4 • Important to incorporate time management and mastery learning into the study skills module • May use a combination of the weekly schedule and exam prep countdown to plan chunked session and to set a goal for each chunk • To achieve the goal for each night the students should go through the same mastery learning steps using an active study technique that works for them • Use active study resources to support what you are saying • Our goal is to learn, not simply to memorize so emphasize using a variety of different study techniques • Ex. If you just use flashcards night after night you do not know if you are learning the material or just memorizing what’s on the card, so if the question isn’t worded like it appeared on the flashcard then you are in trouble. Instead use flashcards for one or two nights and plan other methods for other nights • By the night before the exam the student’s goal should be to be able to teach the material to someone

APPOINTMENT 4 • Going through an exam prep countdown is always a great way

APPOINTMENT 4 • Going through an exam prep countdown is always a great way to apply these concepts but is somewhat difficult if they do not have exams coming up. • Can still talk through the document, but definitely make time to fill one out when they do have exams so that they can apply the concept directly to their classes and have a plan on paper to take with them when they leave

APPOINTMENT 5 • Assessments • This lesson talks more about applying the steps talked

APPOINTMENT 5 • Assessments • This lesson talks more about applying the steps talked about in the previous 3 appointments • Again Thomas Frank has a good video on actually taking test • Still emphasize that trusting the system of mastery learning and properly preparing is the best was to relieve test anxiety and perform well on assessments • There are however some in the test tips that are worth going through to ensure that students are as efficient as possible come test time • in the test tips document

APPOINTMENT 5 • Assessments are part of the learning process and will help identify

APPOINTMENT 5 • Assessments are part of the learning process and will help identify gaps • Exams don’t have to be intimidating- if you use the exam prep countdown and study for 5 -7 nights, you are working with the information so much that a test becomes just an extension of that learning process • The Test Autopsy is a good way to show test are part of the learning process and talk about what changes the students can make to improve on the next exam

APPOINTMENT 5 • Exams are not the only form of assessment • Papers and

APPOINTMENT 5 • Exams are not the only form of assessment • Papers and Projects are also large grades that are meant to assess your knowledge over content • They should be given the same respect as exams and prepared for in the same way • Writing is a skills that develops over time but you can talk about how to speed up that development by using pre writing techniques, peer reviewing, and reaching out to the writing center • Can also talk about what it takes to take control of your grade on a project, whether it is individual or a group. Then talk about what they can do to ensure they implement those ideas in their actual classes

APPOINTMENT 6 • Wellness • Good place to revisit goals, see how they’re doing,

APPOINTMENT 6 • Wellness • Good place to revisit goals, see how they’re doing, and really talk about what is standing in the way of them reaching those goals • If nothing is standing in their way then you know the goals aren’t set high enough • This module is highly personalized and there is really no all encompassing resource that can cover every student • By this point hopefully the coach has built a relationship with the student and can talk about building good habits beyond just the classroom • What happens outside of the classroom will effect what happens within

APPOINTMENT 6 • Weekly Schedule • We have talked about how to most effectively

APPOINTMENT 6 • Weekly Schedule • We have talked about how to most effectively use your homework/study time, we have talked about how to most effectively use your class time, now we can talk about how to most effectively use your free time • Have a discussion about how they DO use their free time and how they WANT to use it • Hobbies • Read • Spend time with friends

APPOINTMENT 6 • Talk about things that they want to do but they don’t

APPOINTMENT 6 • Talk about things that they want to do but they don’t feel like they have time • Eating healthy • Exercise • Go home to see family • The weekly schedule outlines all the time available to you. Work wit the document to incorporate some of the things that they want to do but don’t think they have time • May have to cut down on Netflix/social media

APPOINTMENT 6 • Stress management • Stress is an inevitable part of college for

APPOINTMENT 6 • Stress management • Stress is an inevitable part of college for both traditional and non traditional students • Use the stress management resources to make a plan that students can refer back to when they are feeling overwhelmed • Having something physical and concrete will allow students to act rationally rather than letting the feeling of being overwhelmed affect their academic performance

APPOINTMENT 7 • New module: Professional Development • In the final appointment go back

APPOINTMENT 7 • New module: Professional Development • In the final appointment go back through theme of every appointment and ask the students what they took out of each appointment (double down on why they’re all important) • Time Management • Mastery Learning • Active Studying • Assessments • Wellness

APPOINTMENT 7 • Professional Development is also highly individualized • If short term goals

APPOINTMENT 7 • Professional Development is also highly individualized • If short term goals are going well you can move on to how to address longer term goals • Have to have a good handle on the learning process and show improvement in their classes • Also should have a routine that takes personal wellness into account before introducing professional development into the equation • Options • Internships/ volunteer opportunities/ leadership opportunities/ research opportunities • Part time work • Graduate School • Resume building- to get a job you have to have a competitive resume

SYSTEM • Rarely will the appointments flow like this • In reality it is

SYSTEM • Rarely will the appointments flow like this • In reality it is more important to apply the concepts directly to the classes that the student is currently taking and many times the class schedules dictate when you can do that • Ex. It makes sense to do a weekly schedule and an exam prep countdown the week before finals rather than talking about professional development • The student may also need help with something not covered in these seven examples, it is important that the student can feel in control of what you talk about • Feel like they’re getting something useful out of the experience (keep them coming back)
