Nelson County Focus Group Results 2012 • Weight and Obesity – This issue can be ameliorated through education • Nutritional education has helped before • Participants only knew of one rural health class available to the community – Poverty contributes to this problem – people purchase foods that are cheaper rather than healthier – A lack of walking trails/sidewalks is a barrier to becoming fit within the community
Nelson County Focus Group Results 2012 • Transportation – Participants reported being unable to use resources offered, mainly due to limits to their use • e. g. , solely for medical appointments, always booked, not enough time, and not enough volunteers – One solution suggested was a more informal system in which community residents would be able to carpool, and those with cars could offer to take those without
Nelson County Focus Group Results 2012 • Alcohol and Drug Use – It is a cultural issue: parents are enabling their children – making it a generational problem – and alcoholism is culturally engrained in the population – The problem may be due to a lack of activities available for community members to be involved in – Though people are more educated about the issue, drinking and driving is a major concern in the community
