Mobile IP What is Mobile IP? • Mobile IP is a standard communication protocol that enables a computer to roam freely on the Internet or an organization's network while still maintaining the same home address. • Mobile IP allows mobile node to use two IP addresses. • A fixed home address • A care-of address 2
Mobile IP Topology How datagram moves from one point to another on a Mobile IP network: 3
Mobile IP 4 Mobile IP Functional Entities: ● Mobile Node (MN) – Host or router that changes its point of attachment from one network to another. ● Home Agent (HA) – Router on a mobile node's home network that intercepts datagrams destined for the mobile node, and delivers them through the care-of address. ● Foreign Agent (FA) – Router on a mobile node's visited network that provides routing services to the mobile node while the mobile node is registered.
Mobile IP Applications of Mobile IP Why Mobile IP? • Remote Access VPNs (Virtual Private Network) • Microsoft Office and Windows • Database Application • Voice over IP 5
Mobile IP 6 Remote Host & Mobile Host Communication
Mobile IP Agent Discovery ● The first phase in mobile communication, consists of two sub-phases. ○ Discover a home agent before it leaves its home network. ○ Discover a foreign agent after it has moved to a foreign network. ● The discovery involves two types of messages: advertisement and solicitation. 7
Mobile IP 8 Agent Advertisement & Solicitation ● When a router advertises its presence on a network using an ICMP router advertisement, it can append an agent advertisement to the packet if it acts as an agent. ● When a mobile host has moved to a new network and has not received agent advertisements, it can initiate an agent solicitation. ● It can use the ICMP solicitation message to inform an agent that it needs assistance.
Mobile IP Registration • There are four aspects of registration: 1. Register itself with the foreign agent. 2. Register itself with its home agent. 3. Renew registration if it has expired. 4. Cancel its registration (deregistration) when it returns home. 9
Mobile IP 10 Registration Request & Reply ● A registration request is sent from the mobile host to the foreign agent to register its care-of address and also to announce its home address and home agent address. ● A registration reply is sent from the home agent to the foreign agent and then relayed to the mobile host. ○ The reply confirms or denies the registration request.
Mobile IP Data Transfer Path 1: From Remote Host to Home Agent Path 2: From Home Agent to Foreign Agent Path 3: From Foreign Agent to Mobile Host Path 4: From Mobile Host to Remote Host Transparency 11
Mobile IPv 6 Benefits ● More addresses ● Better Security: ○ Authentication & Encryption improvements over IPv 4 ● Address autoconfiguration ● Better performance ○ Less traffic through home agent ○ Less traffic redirection/re-routing ● Supports bidirectional tunnelling ● Source Routing ○ No need for Foreign agent ● All IPv 6 ready devices & networks are Mobile IPv 6 ready 12

16 Mobile IP Improvements Reverse Tunneling. Same IP Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)Unauthenticated
Mobile IP Flaws of Mobile IP • Security Attacks • Denial of Services • Passive Eavesdropping • Insider Attack • Replay Attack 17
Mobile IP Flaws of Mobile IP • Triangulation • “Triangle Routing” • Causes routing inefficiency between the home and foreign agents • Firewalls • Care of Addresses • Fake Care of Addresses 18
19 Mobile IP Future Scope As transmitted data increases: Triangulations- Finding optimal paths Reliability-perpetual TCP connections
