M&O B Trigger CMS Trigger Components – Global Trigger (AU), TTC… (CERN) – Global Muon Trigger (AU), Global Calorimeter Trigger (UK) – Drift Tube Track Finder (IT, GR, ES), CSC Track Finder (US), RPC Trigger (IT, PL), Regional Calorimeter Trigger (US) – Every one of these components must be working properly to collect and validate CMS data – There is no recourse to reprocessing in case of failures – Therefore, emphasis is on robustness and very quick turn-around in case of any necessary mediation Undisputedly trigger operations based at CERN are crucial for the success of the experiment – M&O B trigger budget is used for trigger operations to support common fund to support personnel and electronics (spares/repair) – The activities funded by M&O B Trigger are mandatory 9/10/2020 Sridhara Dasu (Wisconsin) 1

Trigger Status • Fantastic Performance – Trigger system delivered reliably and efficiently all the triggers requested by physics groups – The operating thresholds are better than originally envisioned in TDRs – Additional improvements made in 2012 to enhance CMS physics capability – Operational experience is very smooth • The good performance is in a large part due to existence of common funds + delegated expenses at the participating institutes – Key to success is availability of personnel at CERN and home – & availability of spares, facilities and supplies for quick repairs 9/10/2020 Sridhara Dasu (Wisconsin) 2
