What are the purposes of internal citations? to give credit to outside sources in the body of your essay to allow your reader to easily check your sources on your works cited page to help you avoid plagiarism
MLA Internal Citations When you cite a source within the body of your paper, it is called an internal citation. All work in your paper that comes from an outside source must have an internal citation unless it is common knowledge. Remember: You have to cite paraphrased as well as quoted material!
MLA Citations: Author-Page Style MLA format follows the author-page method of internal citation. This means that the author's last name and the page number(s) from which the quotation or paraphrase is taken must appear in the citation, unless the author’s name is already in the sentence. For example: Ayn Rand stated that “we shall join our hands when we wish, or walk alone when we so desire" (96). The philosophy of Anthem stated that “we shall join our hands when we wish, or walk alone when we so desire" (Rand 96). Rand extensively explored the philosophy of individual freedom of choice (96).
Internet Source (with author) Most websites do not provide page numbers, so it is acceptable to provide only the author’s last name: “Like the internet itself, the information sources are in constant state of flux and, therefore, this work will also need to change as the sites themselves proliferate and adapt to the new era of electronic print” (Walker).
Internet Source (no author) When an internet source has no known author, use a shortened title of the work instead of an author name. Place the title in quotation marks if it's a short work (e. g. articles) or italicize it if it's a longer work (e. g. entire websites). For example: We see so many global warming hotspots in North America likely because this region has "more readily accessible climatic data and more comprehensive programs to monitor and study environmental change. . . " ("Impact of Global Warming").
Some Internal Citations The dog was found to have been sold to a laboratory in the Bronx, and ended up with its chest cut open due to a failed cardiac pacemaker test (“Pepper Goes to Washington”). At the end of Siddhartha’s journey, he picked up a stone and said, “This. . . is a stone and within a certain length of time it will perhaps be soil and from the soil it will become plant, animal or man. . . but perhaps because within the cycle of change it can also become man and spirit, it is also of importance”(Hesse 145).
