Outlining �By now you should all have a good idea of the direction that your research paper will be taking. �You already have a working thesis “ Today, ______ is considered to be one of America’s most famous people. Today, he/she is considered to be a great leader or example in the field of _____. Benjamin Franklin , one of America’s great leaders, wrote Thirteen Virtues that he believed were necessary for a successful life. ____ was/ was not or was partly successful in achieving some of these virtues.
Why do I need an outline? �Now that you have your thesis and your notes, it is time to begin outlining your research paper. �When writing a research paper an outline helps you to keep track of a large amount of information. �It helps you to organize your ideas and present your arguments in a logical order. �See the example in this folder of an outline for the 7 th grade research paper. This outline is about Vincent Van Gogh.
How does an outline help you to write your paper? �It helps give you a road map to prepare to write your paper. �It allows you to consider if you have successfully proved thesis. �It helps you recognize where you might need additional detail when preparing to write your paper.
It is now time to Start Writing your paper. �When writing your paper it is very easy to Plagiarize without knowing it. �What is plagiarism? �It is the use of someone else’s work or idea without giving them credit. ( It can be intentional or unintentional) �Now that we understand what plagiarism is. How do we avoid it?
How to avoid plagiarism. �Paraphrase: When paraphrasing or summarizing someone's ideas always start with a statement like “According to Dr. Herbert…” �When taking notes indicate which ideas are taken from someone else with a big ‘Q’ and which ideas are your own with a ‘ME’.
Letter from Birmingham Jail � Numbers 5, and 6 all refer to the following passage from Martin Luther King's "Letter from the Birmingham Jail": � You deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham. But your statement, I am sorry to say, fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations. I am sure that none of you would want to rest content with the superficial kind of social analysis that deals merely with effects and does not grapple with underlying causes. It is unfortunate that demonstrations are taking place in Birmingham, but it is even more unfortunate that the city's white power structure left the Negro community with no alternative. �The following are accurate examples of how to cite or paraphrase information: � Martin Luther King wrote that the city of Birmingham's "white power structure" left African-Americans there "no alternative" but to demonstrate” (“Letter from the Birmingham Jail" para. 5).
Letter from Birmingham Jail �In "Letter from the Birmingham Jail, " King writes to fellow clergy saying that although they "deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham, your statement fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations. "
Format for your paper �Double-space the text of your paper, and use a legible font like Times Roman. The font size should be 12 pt. �Create a header that numbers all pages consecutively in the upper right-hand corner, one-half inch from the top and flush with the right margin.
MLA in text Citations �When citing in your papers place the author’s last name and page number of the information in parentheses before the period. For example, Romantic poetry is characterized by the "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (Wordsworth 263). �If it is more than one author with the same name. Although some medical ethicists claim that cloning will lead to designer children (R. Miller 12), others note that the advantages for medical research outweigh this consideration (A. Miller 46).
MLA in text Citation �When citing from website it is important to note the name of the writer as well as the name of the article. For example: One online film critic stated that Fitzcarraldo is ". . . a beautiful and terrifying critique of obsession and colonialism" (Garcia, "Herzog: a Life, " par. 18). �If you do not know the name of the author or group that wrote the article, for the purposes of this paper you may use the website’s name.
Things to know when quoting? �If a quote has less than 4 typed lines then it is a short quote and should be enclosed in quotation marks, as in the example: According to some, dreams express "profound aspects of personality" (Foulkes 184), though others disagree. �According to Foulkes's study, dreams may express "profound aspects of personality" (184). �Is it possible that dreams may express "profound aspects of personality" (Foulkes 184)?
�Quotations longer than 4 lines should be placed in free standing blocks without the use of quotation marks. For Example: Nelly Dean treats Heathcliff poorly and dehumanizes him throughout her narration: � They entirely refused to have it in bed with them, or even in their room, and I had no more sense, so, I put it on the landing of the stairs, hoping it would be gone on the morrow. By chance, or else attracted by hearing his voice, it crept to Mr. Earnshaw's door, and there he found it on quitting his chamber. Inquiries were made as to how it got there; I was obliged to confess, and in recompense for my cowardice and inhumanity was sent out of the house. (Bronte 78)
Works Cited Page �Should be at the end of your paper on a separate sheet of paper entitled “Works Cited”. The title should not be underlined. �Double space all citations, but do not skip spaces between entries. �Must be alphabetically organized. �Indent the second and subsequent lines of citations five spaces so that you create a hanging indent.
