MLA CITATION • When you use information from another source in your paper (whether you are quoting, summarizing, or paraphrasing), you must cite the source in order to give credit to the original author.

MLA CITATION IN-TEXT MLA format requires you to cite your sources in two ways: • In-text citations • Works cited page

IN-TEXT CITATIONS • “In-text citations” are (surprise!) citations that appear within the text of your paper. • This type of citation is also called “parenthetical citation”

PARENTHETICAL CITATION • The basic format of a parenthetical citation is this: • (Boyd 145) Author’s last name Page number

AUTHOR’S NAME IN TEXT If you use the author’s name in your text, you can leave their name out of your parenthetical citation: • According to Stark, the Iron Man suit is a marvel of modern engineering (15).

AUTHOR’S NAME IN CITATION If you don’t use the author’s name in your text, you must include it in your citation: • According to a recent book by its creator, the Iron Man suit is a marvel of modern engineering (Stark 15).

MULTIPLE AUTHORS If there is more than one author, list them all in your citation: • Banner and Rogers write, in their manual for future superheroes, “Fear no one, not even a god” (133). • “Fear no one, not even a god, ” is the advice you’ll find in a new manual for superheroes (Banner and Rogers 133).

NO AUTHOR If no author is listed, use the title of the book or article as your citation (if it is long, shorten it to a few important words): • The article “Super Romance is in the Air” claims that Black Widow and Hawkeye are dating exclusively. • A recent gossip article suggests that Black Widow and Hawkeye may be romantically involved (Super Romance).

NO PAGE NUMBERS • If a source has no page numbers (like a website), follow the usual format but leave out the page numbers.
