Mitosis and Meiosis Review and Compare
Mitosis – Process in which a cell makes a copy of itself – 1 cell => 2 cells – Makes new skin cells, eye cells, bone cells, etc.
Meiosis – Process in which a cell makes 4 gametes – 1 cell => 4 cells – Makes Sperm in guys – Makes Eggs in girls
Word Bank • Gametes – Sex cells that only have 1 of each chromosome – Ex. Sperm, egg 23 + 23 = 46!
Human egg cells are produced in the ovaries through meiosis.
Human sperm cells are produced in the testes through meiosis.
Practice: Meiosis or Mitosis • • • Gamete cells use meiosis or mitosis Egg cells use meiosis or mitosis Liver cells use meiosis or mitosis Bone cells use meiosis or mitosis Skin cells use meiosis or mitosis Sex cells use meiosis or mitosis Muscle cells use meiosis or mitosis Sperms cells use meiosis or mitosis Stomach cells use meiosis or mitosis
Vocabulary • Zygote – A fertilized egg – DNA from mom (egg) is combined with DNA from dad (sperm
Vocabulary • Haploid – Cells with only ONE of each chromosome – Abbreviated as “n” – Ex: sperm, egg – A. k. a. Gamete
Vocabulary • Diploid – Cells with TWO of each chromosome (one from mom and one from dad) – Abbreviated as “ 2 n” – Ex: zygote, skin cells, eye cells, stomach cells – A. k. a. Somatic Cell
Practice: Haploid or Diploid • • Nervous system cells are haploid or diploid Gamete cells are haploid or diploid Egg cells are haploid or diploid Liver cells are haploid or diploid Bone cells are haploid or diploid Skin cells are gametes or somatic cells Muscle cells are gametes or somatic cells Sperms cells are gametes or somatic cells
