Cell cycle/ Mitosis checkpoints • There are strict 'checkpoints' in the cell cycle to ensure that each stage does not start before the previous one has finished. • There are other checkpoints that prevent cells dividing when their DNA is damaged - either allowing time to repair the damage or, if the DNA is too damaged, causing cell death. • Without all these controls and checks, the cells of your body would divide in an uncontrolled way, which could result in cancer. • Remember your Cell cycle/ Mitosis spinner. • The bold lines represent these check points. Think about weighing stations for trucks along the interstate.

Cancer • Cancer is ultimately the result of a cell cycle that is no longer regulated. • Normal cells in the body follow a path of growth, division, and death. When the death process breaks down, cancer begins to form. • Unlike regular cells, cancer cells do not experience death and instead continue to grow and divide. This leads to a mass of abnormal cells that grows out of control. • Diagram A represents a group of cancerous cells (tumor) • Diagram B represents normal cells
