Introduction • • • State in the Midwestern United States Capital: Jefferson City Neighboring states: Illinois, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas. Population: 6, 126, 452 (as per estimate in 2018) Called the “Show me state” The name is derived from a group indigenous people who lived in the area at the time of the European settlement
Historical Context • The original inhabitants of the state were various native groups Missouri Quapaw, Osage) The other native north American groups entered the area as European power and influence on the continent expanded. Some of the native communities were forcibly removed from the state and sent to Oklahoma by the infamous “Trail of Tears” • Despite their history, contemporary Missouri emulates a standalone but inclusive balance between the modern and the rural, liberal and traditionalist
Geography and Topography • Located near the Centre of the conterminous Unites states, Missouri is the meeting place of the eastern timberlands and western prairies and of the southern cotton fields and the northern cornfields. • Missouri lies in “Tornado Alley” the zone of maximum tornadic activity in the U. S. • Missouri has the largest number of farms in the country, the people of the state highly depend on the agricultural sector and the products that are procured from farmlands
Culture in Missouri • Missouri has always been a state fraught with war and controversy, it has hosted many communities and cultures and they have all left their mark on the state. The balance between traditional values and state of the art practices attracts new residents to the state • The arts have always flourished in the state, it was home to writers like Mark Twain who represented Missouri folklore in a lot of his pieces. Missouri was one of the first states in America to establish an Arts council to regulate the guidelines regarding performing arts in the state
Why is Missouri Important? • Perhaps the most interesting fact about Missouri is the stark contrast between its past and its present. It went from being a state that was intolerant to other cultures and beliefs only to emerge as a state that hosts people from all walks of life, its incredibly important to understand how remarkable the trajectory of the state has been as no other state in the country has shown so much improvement in the sector of cultural and religious tolerance • Institutions like “The Missouri Human Rights Council” or the “Nelson- Atkins Museum Of Art” which are know for their accurate representation of Missouri’s culture and history, show us how far the state has come despite facing the perils of war
