Historical Statement African Americans in the early 20 th century were unaccepted. African Americans were mostly slaves, share croppers and soldiers. The racial attitudes towards them were unruly. In the south blacks and whites were segregated. They couldn’t go to the same schools, use the same water fountains sit together on the bus. Economic conditions plummeted due to the dust bowl and the stock market crash in 1929. During the slave era, the slaves used field hollers, spirituals and work songs to synchronize their motions. These types of songs rooted the blues. When African Americans started sharecropping, the whites would loan them land to farm on for a share of their “profit”, even though it wasn’t that much and most of the time they didn’t come out on top the land owners would take the percentage they thought fit and the slaves couldn’t object because they weren’t educated. Blues during this time were sad and tired. You could hear the weariness in their voices about the struggles of living in the south as an African American.

Times is Gettin Harder Times is gettin' harder, Money’s gettin' scarce. Soon as I gather my cotton and corn, I’m bound to leave this place. White folks sittin' in the parlor, Eatin' that cake and cream, N*****’s way down to the kitchen, Squabblin' over turnip greens. Times is gettin' harder, Money’s gettin' scarce. Soon as I gather my cotton and corn, I’m bound to leave this place. Me and my brother was out. Thought we’d have some fun. He stole three chickens. We began to run. Times is gettin' harder, Money’s gettin' scarce. Soon as I gather my cotton and corn I’m bound to leave this place.
