MISE – EN –SCENE IN MUSIC MAGAZINES I have decided to look at the mise-en-scene that are included in music magazines and that fit my genre, audience and style.

MODEL POSITING AND PHOTOGRAPHY RESEARCH

SINGULAR PHOTOS I looked online for images of models in positions that I thought would be ideal for my chosen genre of music magazine. These four photos I thought created an edgy and rural image, which suits the indie side of my magazine’s genre. However, these images are not those I would like to use inside my magazine because I would ideally like to feature a band on the cover of my magazine due to the fact I want to include male and female artists. Although, I like these images I feel the ones with the person not making eye contact with the camera disconnects the readers from the person. Therefore, if the artist was not making eye contact and looking into the camera it wouldn’t connect them to their fans, thus becoming a less alluring and grasping magazine cover.

I have found that throughout many photos and images used on the cover of music magazines have a plain background; it is only those images used on the inside of the magazine that has a little more going on behind the artist. This helps to draw all the attention to the artist and the positioning that they are in. Due to this they stand out on the front cover and grasp audience members and fans of the artist to read the magazine. Although, I am wanting to feature a band on my cover and for a double page spread, I have decided to look at individual positioning's and clothing that they can wear. I have looked on websites such as, urban outfitters, that design their outfits and set out their site with an indie genre. Therefore, helping me to recognise what positions and clothing are typically associated with a Indie genre, thus helping me to gather ideas for how I would like my band to be positioned.

GROUP PHOTOS My main idea is to include a band or group of artists on my front cover, and have a double page spread article introducing or reviewing them. Therefore, I looked into group photos typically seen either on or inside music magazines. These three are the best and most suited to fit onto a cover of a magazine therefore, these have made to look into how to position the band but make the front cover still able to fit in other information without creating a chaotic image. Therefore, I feel the most suited image out of the images is the third one, thus, it has inspired me to create an image similar to the one seen here.

PHOTOGRAPHS – GOOGLE SEARCH I have decided to search online to find out and look for different backgrounds, colours and mise -en-scene items associated with Alternative genre’s such as, indie-rock.

GOOGLE SEARCH – FINDINGS When researching rock music into google search I found that the images that appeared where dark in colour, such as red, black or amber. Suggesting fire or darkness, therefore this has given me a better idea of what sort of colour scheme I should include throughout my music magazine. However, when I searched Indie music the colours were completely different. For example they seemed to be based around pastel colours and the actual image had very little content and they were based around natural and more rural areas thus, giving me ideas for the colour scheme and also giving me ideas for backgrounds to include behind my photos. I then looked at the both genres put together, and this was my initial music genre therefore, it gives me an idea of what is associated with the genre indie-rock.

MUSIC MAGAZINE PROPS Throughout the next slides I look at different props that may be included in music magazines with a indie-rock genre such as, Q.

PROP FINDINGS While looking at music magazines I found that very little if any props are used on the front cover of indie-rock music magazines. If props were used they had some link to the artist’s personality or their music style, such as a guitar or record player suggesting a vintage style of music. However, inside music magazines I found a large amount of props being used such as, instruments or random objects that suggest what the article or interview about them contains or an item that is typically associated with that artist therefore, fans can relate to it.
