Obadiah Introduction The Man • Name means “Servant of Yahweh” (12 others have this name in the OT) • Some have said he was the Obadiah that hid 100 prophets in caves from Jezebel (1 Kings 18: 4). • Some have said he is the Obadiah sent out by King Jehoshaphat to teach the Law of God (2 Chronicles 17: 7). • Little to nothing is known about him in order to positively identify him with any of these cases.
Obadiah Introduction The Mission • Some place Obadiah as early as 845 BC or others as late as 586 BC. • Verses 10 -11 make it clear that the message is in association with a sacking the city but it is not so grave to utterly destroy the city like in 586 BC by Babylon. • Other evidence for an early date is the mention of Ephraim in the North as still standing. Something that was not the case in the later date. • Obadiah mentions that even though they have been brought low they will ultimately be triumphant.
Obadiah Introduction The Message • Could be called “A Tale of Two Mounts” Mt. Zion and Mt. Esau • Another contrast is the “House of Jacob” and the “House of Esau” • Some predictions about Esau 1. Edom will be brought low 2. Edom will permanently be cut off 3. God’s people will consume the Edomites and posses the Philistines 4. In due time Yahweh will be sole ruler over all

Joel Introduction The Man • Name means “Yahweh is God” (13 other men in the OT have this name. • He is the son of Pethuel and probable native of Jerusalem. • Not much is known about the man Joel.
Joel Introduction The Mission • A severe locust plague forms the background of the work of Joel. • The day of the Lord would be an even worse day. • The Teacher of Righteousness would come. • There would be an outpouring of the Spirit on the people. • Then a terrible judgement on physical Jerusalem. • People at the time were experiencing poverty and suffering due to the locusts. • Offerings had been cut off from the temple.
Joel Introduction The Message • Joel pleaded for genuine repentance • He speaks of the Messianic age • The Day of the Lord is a central theme • Also, the New Jerusalem
