Introduction w VNIX = Vietnam National Internet Exchange. w 2 VNIX points: n n One in Hanoi formed in 08 Nov, 2003. The second in Ho. Chi. Minh city formed in 10 Mar, 2004. w Established by VNNIC but funded by Goverment budget. w Some main reasons: n n n Quality of services. International Internet bandwidth. Backup connectivity. Domestic contents. New technology R&D…. 3
Current status (Operation) w All 6 IXP members connect directly to VNIX. w 4 multihomed Net connect indirectly to VNIX via above IXPs. w Transmission infrustructure: All optical fiber. w Port speed: 100/1000 Mbps. w Total traffic has been exchanged through VNIX from the beginning to 31 Jul, 2005: ~1700538. 6 Gbytes. w Peak traffic of the bigest IXP: ~560 Mbps. 4
Current status (Availble resources) w Central switching: 2 Cisco 6509, optical and copper ports, speed 100/1000 Mbps. w Routing management (route server): 2 Cisco 2621. w Traffic monitoring: IBM/Sunfire server. w Space room, rack mount; air-conditioner, UPS, helpdesk and monitoring 24/24. w Backup power: Power regenerator. w ASN and reserved IP address block for point-topoint connection. 5

VNIX policy w w w w w Neutral Internet e. Xchange point. Forced Multilateral Peering Agreement (F-MLPA). Free of charge. Minimum initial connection: 2 Mbps. Bandwidth use ratio: < 70%. Routing protocol: e. BGP-4. ASN and IP address: Independent. Teminal equipments and transmission: to be built by members. Accepting all domestic routing information. Supporting backdoor connections for backup. 9
Next steps (planning) w Setting up monitor tools: Routing information management server, looking glass, HPOpen. View, netflow, RRdtool…. w ISPs might be considered to connect to VNIX for local Internet exchange. w Supporting IPv 6 R&D. w Supporting Multicast R&D. w Mirroring DNS root server. w Cooperating with International IX in R&D. 10
Conclusion w Bettering quality of service. w Many well-known Vietnamese websites move to local service providers. w Decreasing International Internet bandwidth. w Strengthening the safeness and security of Vietnam Internet as well as national information resources. w Supporting new service providers. w Promoting new Net tech R&D in Vietnam. . 11
