SHAFT MINING Windlass A windlass is used for winding down and a bucket with dirt in it. To use a windlass you need, one person to wind it up and down, the other one will be bellow, scooping sand up into the bucket. When gold started to run out people had to start digging deeper into the ground for gold. Miners would dig holes in the ground or shafts these would be approximately 1 meter wide and could be up to 50 meters deep. The miners would put timber along the sides of the shaft to prevent caving in. the miners would use a windlass or winch to bring up the buckets of soil. There needed to be at least 3 people working. The first person shoveling dirt into the bucket and another pulling up the bucket and another separating the gold from the soil.

ALLUVIAL MINING alluvial mining is done on the surface. It is when you pan for gold using muddy water soil, dirt, gravel and sand. You swirl it around in your pan using muddy water the gold sinks to the bottom and the sand gradually washes away. You usually use a cradle, pan or both. Most of the time the gold you find is nuggets or gold flecks.

If you have a second person, they will be rocking the cradle at this time, if not you can do it yourself. Whilst they/you shake it, water, rocks or/and gravel leaving gold flakes caught in the hopper

The gold being heavy, would sink to the bottom of the pan. Then the sand would slowly wash away, leaving tiny gold flakes
