MINICASE STUDY Microsoft Azure Service Bus and Autoscaling
MINI-CASE STUDY Microsoft Azure Service Bus and Autoscaling – The Cloud-Powered Approach to Value-at-Risk “Until now Value-at-Risk calculations on derivatives portfolios had been the preserve of the investment banks. Microsoft Azure has leveled the playing field. ” – George Kaye, CEO, Derivitec MICROSOFT AZURE ISV: Derivitec WEB SITE: www. derivitec. com LOCATION: London, UK ORG SIZE: 4 employees MICROSOFT AZURE ISV PROFILE: Derivitec is a UK-based ISV specializing in cost-effective risk management. The Derivitec Risk Portal allows users to start analyzing risk on their portfolios in a matter of minutes. With industrial standard models and sanitized market data as standard, Derivitec’s customers can focus on the business of business, while Derivitec concentrates on the business of risk. Read about other Microsoft Azure ISVs § SITUATION As a complex risk management provider that needed to scale quickly, Derivitec needed a powerful, user-friendly cloud platform that provided a natural solution to parallel computation. § SOLUTION Microsoft Azure, through its provisioning of Service Bus communication, and an out-of-the-box worker role-scaling model, was the natural fit for Derivitec. Azure makes it possible to allow multiple virtual machines to subscribe to a common message service, and report results back to multiple users asynchronously. The topic-subscription model within Azure Service Bus enables Derivitec’s web app to process data and compute heavy risk calculations optimally via a network of worker roles scaling with the required load. Azure effectively has removed any hardware restriction on how heavy a workload Derivitec can handle. § BENEFITS Azure enables secure, asynchronous messaging from the web server to and from a scalable network of VMs. Scheduled and automatic scaling of compute resource to meet client needs and growth would not be possible without Azure.
