Minibeasts
There are more minibeasts in our world than any other kind of creature!
Insects have a head with eyes, antennae and a mouth part.
Insects have compound eyes This means their eyes are made from lots of tiny parts, almost like having lots of tiny eyes all joined together.
Insects have body parts just like you. . . There are 3 main parts. 1. Head 2. Thorax 3. Abdomen
All insects have 6 legs.
Insects have 2 antennae on their heads.
Insects are the only creatures without bones that can fly!
Most insects hatch from eggs.
Insects don’t have bones inside their bodies like we do. Instead their skeleton is on the outside of their bodies!
Insects move about by walking, flying or sometimes swimming.
Do you recognise any of these insects?
Ladybird
Fly
Bumble bee
Ant
Stick insect
Beetles
Earwig
Butterfly
Most insects live by themselves but some insects, like some bees and ants, are social and live in large groups.
Insects are important for keeping the flowers in our gardens healthy.
However, there are some minibeasts that are not insects. This is because they do not have 6 legs, three body parts or two antennae. Can you think of any bug like this?
Snails are part of the Mollusca family. They don’t have legs and they have a soft body.
Arachnids are creatures with two body segments, eight legs, no wings or antennae and are not able to chew.
