What is classification? • In the same way, scientists classify or organise living things into different groups depending on how similar they are • Within the animal kingdom, animals are classified as either – Vertebrates or - Invertebrates (with a backbone) (without a backbone)
Vertebrates vs invertebrates Classify the following animals by clicking on the word ‘vertebrate’ or ‘invertebrate’ below them vertebrate invertebrate vertebrate invertebrate Next slide
Classifying invertebrates • Invertebrates can be further classified into main groups Arachnids Insects - 6 legs - three body segments thorax - 8 legs head Annelids - long, soft body with many segments but NO legs abdomen Gastropods (= stomach foot) - one slimy foot - sometimes have a shell Myriapods (= many feet) - long, segmented bodies with many legs six Crustaceans - hard, crust-like exoskeleton - 7 pairs of legs
