MINDLESS EATING MINI EXPERIMENT C Jessica Schaub
Topic and Methods • I have conducted an observational study/miniexperiment on the dining hall at Longwood. • I recorded the first 8 people to walk into dhall and recorded how many plates they used.
Why is it relevant to the general population? • I believe this is relevant to the general population because when people are offered unlimited amounts of plates/bowls, the will be more likely to eat more food. People do not think about the amount of food they are eating when they are offered unlimited amounts of it.
Who was studied? • # 1: Female college student • # 2: Female college student • # 3: Female college student • # 4: Male college student • # 5: Male college student • # 6: Female college student • # 7: Male college student • # 8: Female college student * College Students aged 18 -22 years old
Hypothesis • My hypothesis is that if students are given unlimited amounts of plates and bowls, they will eat more food then they would if they were only given on plate.
Methods • I recorded the first 8 subjects that walked into dhall • I then watched them and recorded how many plates they used by the time they left. • I also recorded their age and gender.
Findings • # 1: Female college student - 2 • # 2: Female college student - 1 • # 3: Female college student - 1 • # 4: Male college student - 2 • # 5: Male college student - 4 • # 6: Female college student - 3 • # 7: Male college student - 2 • # 8: Female college student - 3
Were the results similar? • The results were fairly similar from the subjects tested. • Most students used 2 -3 plates at the dining hall • I believe they are similar because they students were offered more than one plate so they took more food.
Did the findings match my hypothesis? • Yes, the findings did match my hypothesis because almost every subject took more than one plate. • My hypothesis was proven true because almost all of the subjects took more than one plate at dhall.
What observations/opinions can you make regarding the Longwood University population? • I can conclude that students at Longwood mindlessly eat at the dining hall because they are offered unlimited amounts of plates/bowls and food. Students should consider the amount of food they are eating and limit themselves to using one plate.
How can these results help to change mindless eating? • These results show people that the amount of food they are eating is too much and they should consider the amount of food they are eating everyday. • Students should get the appropriate proportion of food on their plate to limit mindless eating.
