MINDFUL EXERCISE #1 Welcome to the first “mindful exercise, ” the following lessons should be considered as thoughts to ponder throughout the week.

EVERYONE MATTERS This week’s topic is “Everyone Matters, ” and it has to do with the idea of inclusivity. The challenge for this week, and going forward, is to allow others to be a part of the discussion. Hear what they have to say and include them in group discussions. Instead of possibly brushing them aside or putting their thoughts down, add what they bring to the discussion.

SAY WHAT YOU MEAN AND MEAN WHAT YOU SAY. The second piece of this

SAY WHAT YOU MEAN AND MEAN WHAT YOU SAY. The second piece of this exercise deals with sincerity. If you say something, but are implying the opposite, who can trust that you’re a good person to talk to? Saying what you mean, and meaning what you say, will prove to be helpful in the long run. One of my favorite mantras is that I’d rather be stung with the truth than injured by a lie. What I mean by this is that I’d rather someone hurt me less by being honest, than damaging me through a lie. Most times, a sting takes less time to recover from than an injury.

BE THE PERSON YOU WANT TO BE FRIENDS WITH In the last segment of this exercise, I’m challenging you all to be the person you want (and need) to be friends with. Figure out what that may mean for you… what kind of friends do you like to be around and how does that affect how you behave? What changes, if any, should you make to help yourself become that person you want to be? Reflect on your relationships and see if the people you surround yourself with match those ideal… how can you influence them to be that person you want and need?

SUMMARY Everyone matters: include everyone in your discussion. If someone has something to add, let them add it. (Don’t immediately push their ideas aside, hear them out and use what they have to say as a way to keep the conversation going. ) Say what you mean, and mean what you say: be sincere with what you say… “mean it. ” I’d rather be stung with the truth than injured with a lie. Be the person you want to be friends with: be the positive influence for others, that you would want to surround yourself with. Become the model for your current relationships may need.
