Hannah is HAPPY Let’s look at the things that make Hannah feel happy… Hannah is very active Hannah connects with people • • • She plays with her friends She plays with her brothers and sisters. She is friendly and talks to her neighbours She talks to the adults in school. Hannah is very helpful • • • Hannah learns new things She helps her friends She helps her teachers She helps at home She helps her neighbours She helps her brothers and sisters. . • • • Hannah takes notice • • She learnt how to ride a bike She learnt how to skip She learnt how to do a cartwheel She learnt how to read She learnt how to do difficult maths She learnt all about the world Hannah has hopes, wishes and dreams She likes to notice things around her. She likes to watch the clouds float by She likes to watch a spider weaving its web. She likes to sit and daydream • • Hannah smiles lots! • • • She is in the football team at school She loves to play in the park She loves running races She loves to run around at playtime She goes on long walks with her family She likes climbing trees. What makes you happy? I bet there are lots of times when you felt happy. Have a good think about something or perhaps a memory that makes you feel happy. Talk to the person next to you and tell them about what makes you feel happy. ©ELSA Support 2016
How happy do you feel? Look at thermometer. Number 1 is a teeny bit happy and number 5 is VERY happy. Imagine a time when you were happy. What number would you give your happiness? It is helpful to scale your happiness, every time you do something new. If it makes you really happy it is worth doing again! ©ELSA Support 2016 How big is my feeling?

Being Helpful How can you help someone? Talk to the person next to you. When you help others it really does boost your own happiness. Try it! It works! Hannah is very helpful • • She shares her colouring pencils with her friends. She opens the door for her teachers. She always makes her bed and tidies her toys away. She goes to the post box for her neighbour to post a letter. • She helps her little sister get dressed in the mornings. ©ELSA Support 2016
Being Active How can you be more active every day? Talk to the person next to you and tell them. When you do exercise EVERY day it really does boost your happiness. Try it! It works! Hannah is active by… • • • Playing football once a week Playing in the park with her friends at the weekends. Goes for long walks with her family at the weekends. Runs around the playground 4 times every playtime. Rides her bike to school and back every day. Climbs the tree in her garden lots and lots. Skips with a skipping rope every day. Connecting with others How can you connect more with other people? How can you spend more time with people you care about? Talk to the person next to you and tell them. When you build relationships with others and spend time with them every day, it really does boost your happiness. Try it! It works! Hannah connects with people by: • • • Talking and playing with her friends. Reading a story to her sister at bedtime every night. Visiting her grandma every week. Goes to Rainbows every week. She is pleasant and friendly to everyone and especially to new children in the class. • She goes to football matches with her dad. • She spends time in the garden with her grandad. ©ELSA Support 2016
Take Notice How can you be more mindful? How can you take notice of things more? What can you do? Just take a minute now and be mindful. What can you see? Hear? Feel? After one minute talk to the person next to you and tell them. Taking notice of things around you right now, in the present moment, is also called mindfulness. You might have heard of it. It is a really good way to boost your happiness. It is calming and relaxing and it takes your mind off any worrying thoughts. Hannah takes notice by: • Watching the clouds float by. • Listening and watching the rain trickling down the window pane. • Really concentrating and tasting chocolate when she eats it. • Smelling the bubblebath when she is laid in the bath. • Feeling the fur on her teddy bear. ©ELSA Support 2016
Mindfulness diary You can even keep a mindfulness diary and concentrate on each of your senses. Our senses are sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. Each day record something for each of your senses. Learn something new What would you like to learn to do? Talk to the person next to you and tell them. . Learning new things really boosts your happiness. It is a good feeling isn’t it when you manage to learn something new. Aim to learn something new EVERY day. Hannah has learnt: • • • How to ride her bike. How to swim without arm bands. How to read really tricky words. Her 2 times table. How to bake cup cakes. How to play the recorder. How to make a cut out snowflake. How to tie her shoe laces. Have wishes, hopes and dreams Let’s look at ‘Hopes, wishes and dreams’. When you look forward to something in the future it makes you feel happy and excited. What are your hopes, wishes or dreams for the future? Tell the person next to you. Hannah has lots of hopes, wishes and dreams: • • She hopes Santa will bring her lots of presents. She dreams about meeting her favourite pop star. She wishes she could win the colouring competition. She hopes she meets some more friends at her new school. She dreams about playing on the beach on her holidays. She wishes she could get picked for the football team. Being grateful Take a minute to think about today. What are you thankful or grateful for? Tell the person next to you. When you look at all the things in your life that you can be thankful or grateful for it makes you realise how lucky you are. It helps you to think in a more positive way. Every day try and think about something you are grateful or thankful for. Hannah is thankful or grateful for: • • • Her friend who included her in a game. Her ham sandwiches in her packed lunch. Her teacher giving her a sticker. Her dad taking her to the park after school. Her mum giving her a cuddle and reading a book to her. Her sister sharing her sweets with her. Her grandma and grandad visiting her after school. Her cat coming and sitting on her knee. For not having a cold like lots of her other classmates. ©ELSA Support 2016

Smiling The more you practise smiling the happier you will feel. Smile as much as you can. It really does work. Try and see! Smile at the person next to you right now. Did they smile back?
