Millimetre Astronomy with the Australia Telescope Max Voronkov Software Scientist – ASKAP 12 th June 2009
Australia Telescope at mm: ATCA and Mopra • Good set of receivers: 12 mm, 7 mm and 3 mm • Mopra up to 117 GHz • Broadband backends available! • Application for time via http: //opal. atnf. csiro. au • Proposal deadlines • June 15 (summer time) • December 15 (mm)
CABB - Present mm capabilities More channels (16384) over each 2 GHz sub-band are technically feasible, but the timescale of implementation is uncertain at present
CABB - Zoom modes (example: 1 MHz zoom)
CABB - Zoom modes • The width of a filter bank channel is the width of each zoom window • Coarse resolution of the wide sub-band = bandwidth of 1 zoom window • Stitching is possible (seamless, if interleaved windows are used) • Initially up to 4 zoom windows per each 2 GHz sub-band • Eventually up to 16 zooms per sub-band will be available • Each 2 GHz sub-band (and all its zooms) can have different resolution Resolution Wide Zoom Velocity Resolution 3 mm 7 mm 12 mm Velocity coverage 3 mm m/s 7 mm 12 mm MHz km/s 1 0. 5 1. 6 3. 8 7. 1 3. 1 7. 5 14. 3 4 2 6. 3 15 29 12. 6 30 57 16 8 25 60 114 51 120 229 64 32 101 240 457 202 480 914
NH 3 (4, 4) in G 351. 77 -0. 54 (pre-CABB) • Work by Beuther, Walsh and Longmore • Zero-order (contours) and first-order (colour scale) moment maps • Clear indication of rotation, but no signs of flattening • Rotating surrounding envelope, rather than a disc • The major axis is roughly 10000 AU
Search for CH 3 CH 2 OCH 3 (ethyl methyl ether) Sgr B 2 -M Sgr B 2 -N • 7 mm pre-CABB work by Jones, Cunningham et al. • Lines detected, but no correct brightness pattern with other transitions has been found. So identification may be incorrect.
Masers in G 343. 12 -0. 06 (MNRAS, 2006, 373, 411) • Work by Voronkov, Brooks, Sobolev, Ellingsen, Ostrovskii, Caswell
CABB observations of NGC 6334 I at 3 mm Work by Brooks, Titmarsh, Voronkov, Urquhart done as part of the CABB science commissioning 3 mm continuum (contours) and C 34 S (2 -1) (grayscale)
Recombination lines in G 19. 61 -0. 23 at 7 mm H 53 42951. 47 MHz CABB without zooms
Mopra - a complementary single dish • Similar set of receivers (but can go up to 117 GHz) • Wide-band spectrometer (UNSW-MOPS) available (for a few years by now) Available modes: • Broad-band mode continuous coverage of 8. 3 GHz (0. 25 MHz resolution = 0. 8 km/s at or 3 mm) • Zoom mode 16 windows, 137. 5 MHz each (0. 03 MHz resolution = 0. 1 km/s at 3 mm) See Tui Britton’s poster on BHR 71 for a science example
Summary • ATCA and Mopra are very powerful Southern hemisphere instruments thanks to the new broadband capabilities • CABB: two 2 GHz sub-bands within 8 GHz, optional zoom modes • MOPS: either 8 GHz broad band or 16 zooms, 137. 5 MHz each • Tuning ranges are 16 -27 GHz, 30 -50 GHz and 83. 5 -106 GHz (76 -117 GHz for Mopra) • A number of large surveys are already under way or planned • There is a potential for collaboration, contact the relevant PI if you’re interested. • Mopra HOPS, all Galactic plane at 12 mm (Andrew Walsh) • Mopra MALT-90 at 3 mm (Jim Jackson) • Mopra MALT-7 mm (Gary Fuller), ATCA-7 mm (Andrew Walsh) • ATCA follow-up of the MMB survey detections at 7 mm (myself) • Proposal deadline is only a few days away (June 15)! • This deadline is for the next Oz summer, but night time is usually fine for 12 mm and 7 mm observations.
