Millennium Development Goals Report 2012 Megan Holmes Tanner Skalla
Sri Lanka overall is doing well with the goals, and as a general rule is only improving. Sri Lanka is currently ranked as 97 on the world country list. Within every developmental goal Sri Lanka is either on track or has satisfactory progress all information obtained from: http: //www. undp. lk/Shared%20 Documents/Sr i%20 Lanka%20 MDG%20 Report%202009. pdf
Sri Lanka - Eradicate Poverty & Hunger Eradicate Extreme Poverty & Hunger Currently on track to halve the proportion of people whose income is less than the national poverty level. Poverty has declined 15. 2% from 1990 -2007. They are still struggling with less developed regions than the national poverty line
Sri Lanka - Achieve Universal Primary Education Sri Lanka is on track to provide primary education to children everywhere by 2015 Sri Lanka has achieved near universal primary school enrollment Focus is now on improving quality of education
Sri Lanka - Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women Sri Lanka is on track for 2015 to eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education, and all levels. The rate of unemployment for women is twice that of men
Sri Lanka - Reduce Child Mortality Sri Lanka is on track to reduce by two thirds the under 5 mortality rate The IMR of Sri Lanka is considerably lower than countries wealthier
Sri Lanka - Improve Maternal Health Sri Lanka is on track to reduce by 3/4's the maternal mortality rate Sri Lanka has the lowest Maternal mortality rate in South Asia
Sri Lanka - Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and other diseases Sri Lanka is on track for both reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015 and had achieved universal access to treatment for HIV/AIDS for those in need. Sri Lanka has achieved satisfactory progress in halting and reversing the incidence of Malaria and other major diseases
Sri Lanka - Ensure Environmental Sustainability Sri Lanka is on track to halve the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation We only have satisfactory progress in reducing biodiversity loss, integrating principles of sustainability into government, and improving the lives of a million slum dwellers.
Sri Lanka - Partnership for Development Sri Lanka is on track to make new technologies, especially information and communications, available. We have made satisfactory progress in dealing with debt problems, and developing a better trading and financial system.
Somalia- Overview Somalia has been struggling in the past 20 years to make any progress whatsoever on the Millennial Development Goals for 2015. They are projected to possibly reach only one out of the total 8 goals. They are predicted to fail in all the other categories that would help their country. I believe that the condition of Somalia has flatlined, or decreased in anything. www. so. undp. org/. . . SOMALIA-MILLENNIUM-DEVELOPMENT. html
Somalia-- Eradicate Extreme. Poverty and Hunger Since 2001, the situation for Somalia's poverty and hunger problem has been slowly getting better. There is less poverty in the streets, but it is far from being met. They are predicted to have this issue dealt with before 2015.
Somalia-- Achieve Elementary Education Somalia struggles with trying to get a handle on the school systems. There is no time to go to school because a lot of the children just stay home to help out around the house, or they just flat out cannot afford it. This goal is unlikely to be met.
Somalia--Promote Gender Equality Somalia comes from a long tradition of men being the dominate force in the home and in the culture. This is a hard concept for Somalis to grasp. It is unlikely to be met.
Somalia-- Reduce Child Mortality and Promote Maternal Health Although living conditions are slowly improving, it is still very hard to maintain a clean and safe environment for infants and young mothers. Sickness and disease is a main cause is why these goals will likely not be met.
Somalia-- Combat Diseases The living conditions, lack of clean water and poor health restrictions allow disease to spread like wildfire, so this will likely not be met by 2015.
Somalia--Environmental Sustainability There is a lack of resources in Somalia so the people use what they can find. It doesn't matter if it is the last tree to be cleared for logging or farming, or river water out of a dirty river, the people use what they can get. They will not meet this goal.
Somalia-- Global Partnership There is just a lack of communication and technology here. There is no way of people staying in contact, so because of this, they will not meet their goal. Efforts to get technology to spread across the country have failed time after time.
Overview- Sri Lanka & Somalia is suffering greatly, if anything has gotten worse. Only the goal of Eradicating extreme poverty are they on track. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, is on track or has satisfactory progress in all millennial goals. This shows a great contrast on how two countries, both considered developing worlds, can progress so differently.
