MISSIONARIES IN POLAND Ołtarz w kościele św. Wojciecha w Gdańsku Saint Wojciech First Polish martyrs : st. Benedykt, st. John (they came to Poland from Italy, invited by the king Bolesław Chrobry ), st. Mathew, st. Isaak, st. Krystyn (Poles). On the night of 10/ 11 th November 1003 they were mugged and killed in Międzyrzecz, not far from the mouth of rivers Odra and Warta. They were preparing for their missionary work there. Curious details from the 1 st missionary travel In Pathos st. Paul with two other apostoles– Barnaba and John Mark, were called in by roman proconsul Sergius Paul. There, they met with Elimas Bar Jesus, a"false jewish prophet ". Elimas was afraid that he might loose his power if the proconsul became Christian. Paul was outraged with Elimas, and he made him blind for some time. In Listra st. Paul healed a paralysed man. The crowd calles him Hermes, and they called Barnaba - Zeus. It was difficult to stop people from giving them oblation. When Paul was in Listra his opponents instigated the crowd against him. He was taken out of town and stoned but he survived and returned to town and on the next day he left with Barnaba to Derbe. The woman’s owner was furious (she was earning money as a fortune-teller), and he accused Paul and Sylas. They were hit with rods and sent to prison. At night there was an earthquake and it brought them freedom. On the next day they were freed by the praetors. In Kenchrach st. Paul, shaved his head as he pledged before.
