Thermal Expansion Devices Thermal Expansion devices Its purpose is to deal with thermal expansion of water as it heats up in the water heater - to prevent water pressure from getting too high. If water pressure gets high enough it can damage valves in plumbing fixtures, joints in supply pipes and even the water heater. When do I need a Thermal Expansion Device? New Way �Most contractors are now using a thermal expansion valve in place of the expansion tank when space is an issue. �Much simpler installation �Much less shelf space required
New Way �As you will see in the next slide, the contractor installs the valve and runs a piece of CPVC or tube to a drain outlet. �This sale can be paired with an MR-500 -NPB to keep the drain trap wetted.
