Introduction • Mies van Der Rohe commonly known by his surname Mies was widely regarded as one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture. Although he was an architect mies designed furniture using new industrial technologys. Often incorporating luxurious leather fabrics with modern chrome frames. • The furniture Mies designed was often for clients or to acompany a building on one such occasion mies designed a modern throne for the king of spain although he never sat down.

Early Life • Mies was born in Aachen Germany in 1886. he became an architect and eventually moved to Berlinto worked as an apprentice at the studio of Peter Behrens alongside famous architects such as Walter Gropius and Le. Corbusier • After world war 1 Mies began a series of pioneering modernist projects the most famous of which was the Barcelona pavilion the building he designed the famous Barcelona chair for.

The Barcelona pavillion & the Bauhaus • The Barcelona/German Pavillion is Rhoe's most iconic

The Barcelona pavillion & the Bauhaus • The Barcelona/German Pavillion is Rhoe's most iconic and well known buildings he was given the commision in 1928 however the design came with severe time constraints it had to be completed in less than a year for the 1929 international exposition. Mies delivered an amazing modern design which would become famous for its modernism and use of exotic materials such as travertine and red onyx. • When Hannes Mayer was fired as head of the Bauhaus in 1930 walter Gropius suggested Mies who aggreed. he immediatly interviewed every student and dismissed those he deemed uncommited, in 1931 the nationalist socialist german workers party had the school closedand in 1932 mies reopened in a derilict factory which he paid for to be refurbished the school stayed open here for 10 months until Mies eventually decided to close facing pressure from the Nazis

Career in the US • Following the closure ofthe bauhaus Mies felt frustrated with his homeland in 1937 left for America at first doing residential commisions he was later given the job of designing the entire new Illinois Institute of technology campus • He took the position of Head of the architecture department there and stayed for many of the remaining years of his life but continued doing side projects such as Farnsworth house or the seagram building. • Although Mies died in 1969 many of his buildings still stand many of his teaching practices are still being used at ITT and he is still considered by many the father of modernism.
