Middle Tennessee State University Mission and Values Statement The mission of International Affairs is to strengthen the global and international dimensions of teaching, learning, research and service at MTSU. We believe that: • The promotion of global awareness, knowledge and proficiency should be intrinsic to MTSU; • Global and international awareness, knowledge and proficiency are essential for MTSU students to participate effectively in the 21 st century; • International education is an orientation and approach across the curriculum as well as a separate subject; and, • International education at MTSU should be an integrated and collaborative effort on the part of all levels of the education establishment.

EA Fast Facts Continued Over the past two years, participation in Fall semester programs has increased over 200% while Summer participation increased 38%. Summer includes May term, as well as regular summer session terms. Winter refers to programs which occur during the December. January break between semesters.

Who According to the latest Open Doors figures (2012 -2013), U. S. students are most likely to participate in education abroad during their junior year (35%), followed by their senior year (25%), sophomore year (14%), and finally freshman year (4%). Nationally the gender ratio in education abroad has remained fairly constant over the past ten years – 65% female and 35% male. MTSU’s gender breakdown is consistent with the national trend.

Middle Tennessee State University The most important thing that schools can do is to make people aware that understanding the world is very much part of the requirement of being an educated person. There should be some shame attached to not being more aware of the world. Fareed Zakaria College must prepare students to adapt and respond effectively to whatever international problems and opportunities may confront them later in life, but how we accomplish this remains clouded by uncertainty and confusion.
