Georgia Formative Assessment Item Bank Will contain 1600+ classroom assessment items Aligned with ELA and mathematics content standards for grades 3 – 11 Housed in OAS Most items at depth of knowledge (DOK) 3 or 4 DOK 2: 19% DOK 3: 41% DOK 4: 39% Item, rubric, and scored student sample papers provided Coweta Committed to Student Success
Mathematics Common Core Standards Require students to understand why they are doing the things they are doing Expect that students Be able to explain why they're doing what they're doing Justify why they are doing it, not just explain what they are doing Coweta Committed to Student Success
Purposes for Using Formative Assessment Items Prepare students for more rigorous expectations of the state-mandated standards Provide students practice with open- and constructed-response items Provide teachers insight into the types of problems students will be expected to do Provide teachers with opportunities to evaluate open-ended response items Coweta Committed to Student Success
Using Formative Assessment Items Part of instruction in a lesson or unit Used to identify student strengths and weaknesses Helps teacher determine next steps Review Differentiation Continuation Provides teacher and students detailed feedback Intended for low stakes purposes Coweta Committed to Student Success
Features of Mathematics Formative Items Aligned to multiple standards One primary standard One or more secondary standards Include intentional focus on standards for mathematical practice Use real-world context Require students to provide written explanations Illuminate student misconceptions Coweta Committed to Student Success

Formative Item Formats for Mathematics Multiple choice Constructed response Extended response Scaffolded tasks Coweta Committed to Student Success
Multiple Choice Items Have four answer options Include believable distractors which represent common conceptual and/or application errors Distractor rationales assist teachers in identifying specific student misconceptions to inform instruction Coweta Committed to Student Success
Example of Multiple Choice Formative Assessment Item Coweta Committed to Student Success
Extended Response Items May address multiple standards, multiple domains, and/or multiple areas of the curriculum May allow for multiple correct responses and/or varying methods of arriving at a correct answer Scored through use of a rubric and associated student exemplars/anchor papers Coweta Committed to Student Success
Example of Constructed Response Item Coweta Committed to Student Success
Scaffolded Items Include a sequence of items or tasks Designed to demonstrate deeper understanding May be multi-standard and multi-domain May guide a student to mapping out a response to a more extended task Scored through use of a rubric and associated student exemplars/anchor papers Coweta Committed to Student Success
Example of Scaffolded Task Coweta Committed to Student Success
How Students Respond Multiple Choice Students can respond to multiple choice items regardless of the content area within the OAS. Constructed-Response o ELA: Students can respond with OAS. o Math: Students can view constructed-response in OAS but must provide written responses on paper. § § There is no math editor in OAS. Some items require students to show work or draw a graph, number line, or figure. Coweta Committed to Student Success
Rubrics Holistic 5 -point scale (0 – 4) 4: 3: 2: 1: 0: Thoroughly demonstrated Clearly demonstrated Basically demonstrated Minimally demonstrated Incorrect or irrelevant Coweta Committed to Student Success
Exemplar and Anchor Papers Exemplar Prototype answer The “ideal” response Anchor papers Set of responses from actual Georgia students during item pilots Scored by trained raters using rubric Allow teachers to review and compare their own students’ work to the sample responses for different scores Helps standardize expectations of the standards Coweta Committed to Student Success
