Geographical Characteristics and Climate • The climate and soil were excellent for farming • Good soil • Summers were warm • winters were bitterly cold
Reason for Settlement • The King of England gave this colony to his brother James, The Duke of York, for farming. • New York was first settled by the Dutch.
Religious Beliefs • They were Christians. • Not many churches. • Some people who went to church would sometimes stay for the whole day. • Church was a very important affair to New York people.
Government • Because proprietors lived in England, it was difficult for them to control their faraway property • Self-government • Representatives • Proprietor picked the governor because James the Duke of York lived in England
Education • Most children in the middle colonies learned how to read and write, but many colonists believed that it was most important for children to learn useful work skills • There were no girls unless they were Quakers.
Agriculture and Manufacturing • Farmers raised livestock such as cattle and pigs. • They grew vegetables and fruit • Farmers grew grain like wheat, corn and barely.
Settlements and Homes • At home boys helped plant and harvest crops. • The girls sewed and did housework.
Towns and Cities • New York is one of the most important and largest city. • Ports and centers of shipping and trade • The free market economy of these successful cities attracted merchants, shopkeepers, and artisans.
